We need to know what you have and what you are doing - what OS and version of Photos?  Photos uploads what you tell it to - where are you uploading to and how? Uploading to FaceBook gives a totally different result than uploading to iCloud Photo Library

Hy LarryHN, thanks for your reply. I currently am using osx 10.11.4 and the version of photos is 1.5.

I would like to know if the pictures that i upload via Photos are uploaded to my (paying) icloud drive in their original format or if it is best that i keep the originals on a external HD.

I would like to free some space on my MB.

    Thanks,

    ambro

And hoiw are you doing the upload?

Photos uploads what you tell it to - where are you uploading to and how?

The best way to confirm exactly what you are getting it to do it and then check the results

And I strongly suggest that you not count on iCloud Drive as an archive - if information is  valuable to then you need a local archive and two or more local backups

Ok - glad you resolved this but I still do not know How you did the upload - there is no "Upload to iCloud Drive" command in Photos and unless you answer exactly how you are doing it no one can help -

You said you were uploading to iCloud drive - the Photos app does not do that

upload via Photos are uploaded to my (paying) icloud drive

If you are using iCloud Photo Library hen the original is uploaded for all images

So in order to have us help you you have to tell us exactly what you are doing - what you are currently saying you are doing is not possible

Yes  --  had you provided the complete and correct information this could have been answered the very first time

iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support

What if I edit a photo or video in my iCloud Photo Library?

Any edits you make (such as crop or apply a filter) automatically update across all of your devices. We store the original version of your photos in iCloud, so you can revert to the original view at any time. If you choose Optimize Device Storage, your original photo or video will download for edits.

We can not see you so you have to provide accurate details - iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos Library are two totally separate services
