"Green orange orange"?  This document says that means "Device should be restored because of an error."

Check the status light and battery charge on your iPod shuffle - Apple Support

If you're new to iTunes 12, the shuffle appears as a small device button on the horizontal bar.  Here's a screenshot of my iTunes window (upper left corner) showing a shuffle's device button (circled in red).

You don't see the shuffle's device button when you connect it?  If you do, click the device button to show the shuffle's settings screen. You can do the Restore from the shuffle's settings screen.

If you do not see it, restart your computer.  Put the shuffle's power switch in the OFF position, run iTunes, and try connecting it again (use a direct USB port on computer).  If the shuffle still does not appear in iTunes, watch the iPod's light when you connect it.  Is it blinking orange?  Is it ON but solid (not blinking)?  Is it OFF?  Does the shuffle appear in Windows as a USB storage device?
