Q: iPhone 6 plus intermittent unresponsive screen

So a couple days ago, my iPhone 6+ began having intermittent screen responsiveness. First time, I received a phone call and couldn't answer it because the swipe wouldn't work. I turned it off and back on with no luck. I reset it and that fixed it. That was the only issue that day. I the last few days it's becoming more frequent. Today alone I've had to reset it eight times.

What it's doing;

  • touch screen is unresponsive to touch entirely.
  • touch screen responds after a delay
  • I tap an app icon and the app two rows up opens instead.
  • from loch screen-can't answer phone calls or notifications.

Sometimes it just leave it alone and come back to it and it's fine. Sometimes I leave it alone and come back with same result and I have to reset it. Sometimes I reset it once and trying to unlock with touchscreen (because touch ID doesn't work after reset) doesn't work so I reset it twice. It has worked after the second time, so far.

The phone is in perfect condition. Never been dropped. Was updated to 8.3 the day it was released so the issue didn't arise immediately after an update.

Anyone having these issues?

This may not be a solution, but it may be worth a try as a "second opinion" - Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) can be found  here > https://locate.apple.com/

Apple's "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" are indicated with these designations

Thanks for the link, but I tried that. I went to the Apple certified repair store in my town. I told her that I had restored the phone to factory spec's and all the other tricks on the internet. I showed her how the gray/white blinking line at the top of the screen and the touch screen lockup could be replicated and temporarily fixed by slightly flexing the corners or pushing on the back. She said that they've been seeing a lot of that lately. She said that she could run a diagnostic test, which she did, and said that the only thing she could do was send it in or sell me a refurbished iPhone 6+ for $300 and some odd dollars plus trade. As soon as I heard the price I was like a deer in headlights. I asked if that was my only recourse and she shook her head yes.

There ya go... yet further evidence that it is a known widespread problem

"... She said that they've been seeing a lot of that lately. She said that she could run a diagnostic test, which she did, and said that the only thing she could do was send it in or sell me a refurbished iPhone 6+ ..."

-- and that they are bound by Apple's "policy" on the matter.

Folks that are getting "satisfied" are being given special dispensation by the Apple Store management on a case-by-case basis.

Add my iphone6+ to the list of flickering grey lines at the top of the screen, and unresponsive touch screen. I called Apple support, to get the it sounds like a bad digitizer, and your phone is out of warranty, so it will be $129. Would you like to make an appointment at a Genius store? I told him, if I push in the middle of the screen, it will work, and it looks like all of the other complaints on line, that they are having issues with a solder joint on one of the chips, he told me he hasnt heard of that, and replacing the screen has been fixing them. I called one of the Genius stores, which the closest is 45 miles one way, and I couldnt get in until late next week.

Just a thought, but being pressure on the middle of the back of the phone makes it work, has anyone tried to shove a folded piece of paper between the phone, and their case, to apply pressure in that spot? I know it isnt the screen/digitizer, I had brought it into a local repair place, and they already tried one.

I loved my iphone 6+ until this started happening, and I would like to make milk it along until this fall to see what the iphone 7 has to offer. I am willing to spend a couple hundred to fix it, but I cant be without my phone, I also use it for business, and I dont have a replacement phone anymore. I think Apple needs to step up on these, and take care of their loyal customers. I have had every version of the iphone since they came out. I have 5 iphones on my family account through Att, on the business account. If Apple wont step up, and I cant milk my phone until the iphone 7 comes out this fall, I will move to a different model, and my family, and business phones will follow. I dont know the exact amount of iphones on the business account off the top of my head, but its well into the double digits. SO Apple wont be just losing one customer, they will be losing multiple repeat sales. Apple fan boy I was, they will need to step up to keep me.

Exactly the same problem here in Austria with a 128GB iPhone 6 plus after 19 months only. For a €1000 product this is rediculuos. I will contact Apple to see what they are willing to do.

Yea, it's really a frustrating process to go through this although i managed to get a replacement for my 15 mths old phone. I can imagine how would those guys feel when you can't get it repaired because of a defect that has nothing to do with them. I guess this defect has nothing to do with heavy usage as most manufacturers would know the trend of most smart phone users. And i guess most users wouldn't be using their phone to knock something too.

IMO, Apple should be considerate about how much inconvenience(some would suffer financial loss) the users would face when the phone can't even do a basic function like receiving a call. In return, some Apple staffs would mistreat you. I myself experienced that. Some staffs would say that all the problems you faced are your problems and nothing to do with them. A staff from China call center would say that Apple is a leading company which only use top quality parts and they wouldn't repair the phone since it's out of warranty. So, it's chargeable for any repair. Some are terrible for handling this kind of defect. I guess it's mostly the result of Apple management having no policy to handle this defect.

I hope some tech sites would mention this problem so that there could be a solution soon. If a large batch of phones with this kind of defect is on the market, we would see more as the time passed.

Finally gave up and had an old phone turned on because my 6 plus is so bad I can't even answer calls most of the time.  The AT&T employee told me this is a very common issue that he is seeing more and more often. So Apple continues to screw their customers and AT&T knows their customers are being screwed by a vendor but can't and won't do anything about it. I'm ready to leave both of them.

Tech sites just LOVE to jump on any perceived failing of Apple or their products. So the fact that none of the tech sites have mentioned it may mean that the problem is not as widespread as you think it is.

I purchased a new Nexus 5x and switched to Google Fi after the failure of my 6+.

Yes, you get lots of hits, just like you do for "the earth is flat" (189 million hits). But none of them are reportage from any of the major tech sites; they are scattered user reports.

I Am having the same issue everybody else in this discussion. My phone freezes and has grey and white lines at top of my screen. Can't do anything. sometimes when I touch the screen It opens up something I didn't push. If I push firmly on back of the phone it goes away. I called apple and my phone had just recently come out of warranty so no replacing it. I have insurance but it's 300 dollars to replace it. Not paying that to just to get another phone I've had nothing but problems with.

I'm still looking for the "Utterly Unhelpful" button to tag Mr. Finch's posts with.

On the other note, does anyone know where to get a good deal on a Nexus 5X? Hmm, never mind, any useful response will get deleted shortly...

I just laid my iPhone 6+ to rest, because of this issue. It will get progressively worse as you use it, so have a backup plan. I am now using an iPhone 4. In regard to Lawrence's reply who thinks that nothing goes wrong with iPhone 6+, try searching "the iphone 6 has no problems" and you'll get "About 17,800,000 results." This is just as relevant as your earth comment.
