Q: iPod Recovery

I have an iPod touch 5th generation that I'm locked out of, so I put it in recovery mode (with the button sequence) and it gave me the options to restore or update, so i clicked (I have clicked both) and it told me to restore and update so I clicked that. When I do the process starts but about 2 minutes in it stops and says

"All downloads and file copies have been paused. The disk you are attempting to use is full.

Removing files and emptying the recycle bin will free up additional space."

I hit ok and it acts as it will continue when it stops and says

"There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod "(Name of iPod)". The disk you are attempting to use is full.

Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."

What am I doing wrong? What can I do to fix it? How can I reset it so I can get it to it? Thanks SOO much.
