Q: Red light from audio input (sound works in Win 10 but no in OS x)

Hi,

I have a MBP mid 2012. The headphone socket red lights up and no internal sound in El Capitan. After that, I used Boot Camp and set up Win 10. In Win 10, the internal sound works but still lights red in headphone socket during playing sound files. I wanna get rid of this red light and hear internal sound in El Capitan.

What is the problem?  If it is hardware problem, why does it work in win 10?

Not: I also tried toothpick solution but not worked.

MacBook Pro, null

    Hi mrtindiana,

I understand you are not able to hear sounds from the internal speakers using the headphone jack.  If the red light is lit in the line-out port, you will need to have your MacBook Pro inspected at an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider near you.

Check to see if a red light is lit in the line-out port. If so, your Apple computer may need service.

You can obtain service (if needed) through an Apple-Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store please make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).

    Take care,

The ports are "universal". Can be used for analog wire-based headphones, speakers, etc. Or for digital fiber-optic TOSlink connections, which is where the red laser light comes into play. There's a tiny selector switch deep inside, triggered by the longer TOSlink connector. In your case, it is probably stuck in "digital mode".

Can visit the Store or a service provider, as suggested. Or can spray a bit of high-quality non-residue electronic contact cleaner and "work" a headphone plug in and out a few times to see if the switch becomes unstuck.

I tried the cleaner but still doesn't work. I cannot understand if it is physical problem  why it works in Windows but not in El Capitan

    Try these options:

Blow real hard into the port or use compressed air.

Insert the ear phone jack, depress a volume function key and withdraw the earphone jack.

    Ciao.

I chated with apple service provider and the provider  believed that the problem is about software and suggested erase and reinstall the os x . I have just done it but still not working.

The problem is that the internal switch is stuck as Courcoul described.  Try wiggling a toothpick inside the port and see if that works.

    Ciao.

Windows is an alien world for me.  I cannot answer that question.

    Ciao.
