Q: imovie 11 and iDVD

I currently have iMovie 10 on my MacBook Pro Retina.  I need to find a different version of iMovie that can create chapter/scene markers.

1) Can anyone tell me which version I should buy?

2) It appears that I cannot buy any other version through the app store.  I assume this means I have to buy the CDs and load another version onto my Mac?

3) If I do load a different version of iMovie, can this new version access the library I created with iMovie 10?

4)  I also want to burn DVDs, once I finish he project.  Could someone tell me what version of iDVD I need to be compatible with the version of iMovie that you recommend for chapter makers?

Thanks...

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

    1. Ideally iMovie HD 6 (part off iLife 6) which remains the best version.

    2. Correct. Try Amazon or eBay.

    3. No. there is no backwards compatibility.

    4. Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

If you are using El Capitan see this thread:

    Thanks for your reply.

    1) I don't want to have to start over rebuilding my movie, just to be able to use an earlier version of iMovie that will allow me to create chapters.  Would it be possible to save the iMovie 10 project as a file ( which I believe then puts it into a format that is one long clip rather than several separate clips) and then import that saved file into iMovie HD 6 to create chapter markers?

    2) If this is not an option, then do you have any suggestions for me on how to prevent recreating the wheel with my movie?

    3) Will iDVD 06 that comes with iLife 06 work with El Capitan or do I have to buy iDVD 11?

iMovie 6 HD does not work with El Capitan.  I've created a partition on my boot drive and installed Mavericks on it so I can run iMovie 6 HD and iDVD 7.1.2 when I need to use them to create projects and video DVDs.

iDVD 7.1.2 does work with El Capitan but a couple of it's newer themes that has animated menus does not.

    Technically quite true.

However, if you're not afraid of Terminal you can get iMovie 6 HD  to work perfectly with El Capitan.

Searched the web for:  iMovie 6 HD El Capitan.  Multiple solutions can be found.  But I do agree with old toad just using Mavericks is the easiest way to go.

All this just goes to show how good iMovie 06 HD really is, when you consider the efforts people are willing to go through to continue using it.

Does the methodology you posted regarding getting iMovie 6 to work on Yosemite (I kept a copy of your post) also work for El Capitan?

If so, why not post it here?

    Klaus:

An easy way to run iMovie 6 HD with Yosemite or El Capitan is to open the application and make an alias of the iMovie HD file in the iMovie HD/Contents/MacOSX folder:

    Highlight001.jpg

Then any time you launch iMovie HD via the alias the Terminal app will open and you just need to hide it while you use iMovie.  I've not used it extensively but I did just run a test this morning with a movie created from stills, an audio file and added a number of chapters.  When shared to iDVD it worked as it did on earlier systems, giving me the full movie and a chapter select menu.

You can download the full cracked iMovie HD 6.5.1 app see here Tutorial Video. Works all the way up to OSX 10.11 https://youtu.be/-Di9iPpJEVg

I just tried it and it works as advertised.  Thanks for the feedback.

There's also another fix that was posted by Mike Heasley in the iMovie community.  I've edited his complete post to just the relevant part.

So the script works, but I have figured out a way to modify/patch iMovie HD to run directly.  This may or may not be the same as the patch mentioned above, but it works for me.  The steps are:

    1. Right-click iMovie HD and select Show Package Contents
    2. Double-click the Contents folder
    3. Right-click Info.plist, go to Open With, then Other...
    4. Select TextEdit
    5. Once the plist file is open in TextEdit, search for CFBundleVersion
    6. You will see 2 lines (amongst a bunch of others):
    <key>CFBundleVersion</key><string>6.0.4</string>
    1. Change 6.0.4 to any other (higher) number.  I changed it to 6.0.5 and it worked fine.  You might change it to something higher than that in case Apple decides to disallow other 6.x.x numbers in the future. 10 (the current iMovie major version number, no .x.x needed) also worked just fine.
    2. Save the plist file in TextEdit

    I hope this helps!

Note:  after changing the plist file the app will open and have a new icon:

    Finder001.jpg

The drawback is that you have to have iMovie 6 HD to modify.
