Q: 2nd generation ipod not syncing

Hi i'm trying to sync my second generation ipod nano (version 1.1.3) with my itunes (version 10). I'm on a windows 8 laptop.

At the moment when I plug in the USB cable, nothing happens. Under file > sync ipod it's greyed out. I've tried all three USB ports on the laptop and tested the cable and it seems fine. I've restarted itunes, and the ipod, tried it on itunes version 12 via my husband's laptop (windows 10). Deactivated and reactivated itunes on my laptop.

Can you help?

iPod nano, Windows 8

How did you test the cable to confirm it is working properly?

At the moment when I plug in the USB cable, nothing happens.

"Nothing"?  When you connect it, the iPod's screen does not react in any way?  It does not say "Do not disconnect" or "Connected" or show any sign of a connection?  It does not even show the battery charging symbol?

If you have confirmed that the USB docking cable is not faulty, and you connected it to more than one computer (plus the other things you described in first post including a reset/restart of iPod), my guess is that the iPod's dock connector is worn out (or damaged) and is not making proper contact with the cables's connector for data.  There are separate pins on the connector for power and data.  It seems to be connecting for power (since the battery charging symbol appears on iPod's screen), but it is not connecting for data.

Shine a flashlight or other bright light into the iPod's dock connector to visually check for any obvious damage, corrosion, dust accumulation, or debris that may be preventing the connection.  The problem could be on either side of the connection, but you said you "tested the cable."  Try a different (preferably newer) cable, if possible.
