Q: iPhoto 11 - Problems With Photo Locations

Now that I can finally get back into my iPhoto library, I'm trying to update the locations on some recent photos. With no luck!

1) On the photos that have embedded location information, I can see the location name BUT the map is blank. It makes me worry that the location data is defective. Any ideas on how I can get the map to display. (I actually DO see the correct map for a brief instant before it switches to the blank white box you can see in this screen capture)

Screen shot 2015-07-01 at 8.00.54 AM.png

2) On the photos with no embedded location data, I usually use my web browser to search for my location using maps.google.com, then I copy and paste the place name (and address) exactly as maps.google.com shows it. Always worked in the past, will not work now! I just tried it with the location name "Parco Acquedotti Appia Antica, Via Lemonia, Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy". For kicks, I tried "Detroit, Michigan" instead - also no luck!

Anyone know what causes this in iPhoto 11, and what I could do to correct it? Thanks!

Have you performed all the necessary steps to get Google's API for its Maps?

I hope! I've enabled the Google Maps Javascript APIs, then I've created a new key (for browser), then i changed the code inside Aperture -> resources  -> googleMap.html following cotton-x's instructions. The code that I've found in googleMap.html differs slightly from the one posted by cotton-x:

    my file reports that string

    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/jsapi?key=ABQIAAAAUf_qajf1-p8SUXIhbPrkJRSdqNO9DHQ3Pe7dmEbj ibfx65pwcBRkf2BLR1Z-ToHuZvgRRBJksKA-WQ"></script>

so I changed it in src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?key= and then pasting my key followed by &signed_in=true&sensor=false">.

Before patching googleMap.html, when selecting Places from Aperture's inspector, the app showed me that message:

    Schermata 2016-05-17 a 12.46.08.png

And after the patch, Places is blank and no message is showed.

Maybe that patch doesn't work for Aperture 3.2.4?

I don't have Aperture 3.2.4 any more, but it is working with Aperture 3.4.5 Patching Aperture 3.4.5 to make Places work again

    THANK YOU LEONIE!

    Finally, that solved my problem

I placed my google api key in your file and now it works like a charm

In fact the code inside the two googleMap.html has some big differences, and the one coming within my googleMap.html version was really obsolete. I have too much hardware that is no longer supported by OS newer than the good old 10.6.8, so I'm forced to stay with it...

    Thank you again léonie!!

Althought it seems you've manage to resolve your issue I put into my 2 cents. You said you pasted the portion &signed_in=true&sensor=false">. Did you pasted the closing tag </script> at the end of the line as well? You have to be extremely careful when dealing with code. That could be a reason of your initial failure to properly modify the googleMaps.html file.

Also could you, please report if adding new pins DOESN'T work?

Of course, I didn't changed code that was unnecessary to change, including the closing tag. It wasn't an issue due to syntax as much as the html code itself.

Here my original html, notice that it differs from léonie's one.

... And adding new pins DOESN'T work. Maybe the same patch need to be applied to /Contents/Resources/GoogleSearch.html.

I can't help you because I'm sure my GoogleSearch.html is outdated like the other file. If you could send me a GoogleSearch.html from Aperture 9.4.3 I'll try to patch it and see if assign locations will work again.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/w0iogbvt3d0opj1/googleMap-original.html?dl=0

    P.S.

I don't like to assign location from Aperture because data isn't stored in the image exif, so when exporting the pictures they come out without geolocalization...

    Hi Topolinux,

    Here's a link to download a copy of the file GoogleSearch.html of iPhoto.app 9.4.3 package: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bwsy7q2Qc3TCb1lkRjdNNWRqU1k/view?usp=sharing

Please update if you come up with some results that would satisfy you.

Oops, I misremembered what you asked:

    Here's another for Aperture's 3.4.5 GoogleSearch.html:

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bwsy7q2Qc3TCb1lkRjdNNWRqU1k

    I suspect it's identical to iPhoto's one.

Hi scrutinizer82, the GoogleSearch.html files are all identical in Aperture 3.2.4, 3.4.5 and iPhoto versions. Unfortunately the search engine works bad: I can search and find only cities, but is not possible resize areas around pins or search for addresses and streets, patching or not patching the GoogleSearch.html code...

Finally, it is not a such bad deal because now we can see our pictures locations again INSIDE Aperture/iPhoto...

For geotagging images I'm currently using Photolinker that works like a charm.

Then you're lucky because when I copy pasted that same already modified API code  from googleMaps.html (of iPhoto.app) into GoogleSearch.html it made no difference in that I still didn't regained option to search for and tag new locations be it cities or areas except those that are showing up in Manage my Places.

Hmm... That sound strange... I show you what happens when I search a place from the Places window (Aperture): here the search engine found some results, and when I have selected Phuket it placed a blue pin on the map. Pressing "assign location" effectively assigns that pin to a previously selected image.

    Schermata 2016-05-18 a 14.34.01.png

The same happens when I search a place from the Inspector -> metadata tab. Again, if I press the "V" button the new location is stored. I can move the pin from that tab but no way to adjust the size of the circle around the pin (in fact, there is NO circle area). Moving the pin and saving the new location makes effective change of the location name and of the pin location.

    Schermata 2016-05-18 a 13.24.25.png

If I try to assign a location from the Project view -> information popup window of a project, I'm only able to find a place. No way to move the pin and rename it.
