Q: Possible hardware problem?

This is a followup to a previous post I had made a few weeks ago.

Background - I have a mid-2010 iMac (11,3) with 12 GB RAM and a 1 TB disk.  Late last year, I noticed a significant slowdown in applications starting and more often than not, the system would hang when rebooting, requiring a hard reset in order to reboot.  After playing with things off and on, I did a fresh install of OS X on an external drive and that appeared to work fine until I turned on Time Machine.  Again, playing with things over a period of time led me to try taking everything off line except keyboard, mouse, external boot drive and Time Machine drive.  As long as Time Machine was turned off, all was well; turning TM on, caused the system to get real slow or hang when doing things like bringing up the disk utility, file manager, etc.  Finally, did a fresh install of OS X on a new external drive, again only keyboard, mouse, external boot drive and TM drive.  No updates, no added applications.  Same result.  As a double check, I took my original external boot drive to a 2008 iMac (8,1) and booted off of it and attached a blank disk for use as a TM drive.  No problems with backups.

Obviously, there is (or at least appears to be) a hardware problem that prevents TM from operating properly.  As I said, this is a six year old iMac and I'm ready to throw in the towel on it and replace it, but I still would be interested in any ideas that anyone has as to what might be going on here.  I should add that along the way, I've done (many, many times) the usual routine for resetting Time Machine - deleting the TM plist file and re formatting the TM drive.

Has anyone come across anything anywhere similar to this?

Thanks.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), Time Machine via USB hub

Finally, let me apologize for the fragmentation of the crash report.  The forum kept reporting invalid characters in the posts and I finally narrowed it down to a single line in the LangAnalysis section, said line dealing with CoreFoundation.  I even hand typed the line and it still gave the error message.  Would have been better to just be able to attach a file, but that doesn't see to be an option here.

    Thanks.

Yes --- and its not hardware - its underlying OSX that is the issue.

My time machine had about 4 years of backups - in the end could not get past the day I had a system freeze while doing very fast changes to files.

In the end - - determined the problem was caused by Spotlight/finder indexing that could not keep up with the changes.

I erased my time machine drive - and partitioned it - using one partition for time Machine.  (Will at some point switch to the other partition so that I don't lose a backup-- noticed for a while before the freeze  that time machine first backup (I shut down after use) was having longer delays between between the first KB written and continuing on)

As I rarely if ever used spotlight - I put time machine and my HD in private area as I don't want to index everything all the time.

Biggest change - Turned off Hourly backups, so I determine when and how many times I run time machine during a session - always running it at least once.

Apple OSX freeze problem has been around for a long time - In the following thread I have listed some of what I found/find - and did.

notcloudy, thanks for the input.  I read through your link and it appears that you are at least still able to perform backups.  In my case, that just is not possible.  When I start a backup, using a newly formatted hard drive for the TM drive and after having deleted the TM .plist file and rebooting, it gets to about 330M of a 1 TB drive, says calculating remaining time and does nothing more, even after letting it go over night (about 10 hours).  It is after this and stopping the attempted backup that any sort of interaction with the machine essentially hangs - rotating, multi-color wheel and nothing can be done.  The fact that this happens with nothing attached to the iMac except an Apple keyboard, Apple mouse, external boot drive, and the TM drive (5 TB), and the additional fact that the external boot drive, when attached to another iMac, works just fine, TM backups and all, indicates to me that the problem is not in the external boot drive or the OS, but hardware.  At this point, I'm just curious as **** as to what hardware has failed that allows me to use the iMac as if nothing has happened, but does not allow me to perform a TM backup.

What percent of your hard drive is filled?   I have a 300GB hard and my time machine is now on a 500GB partition of a 1TB drive.

My cleanup and seize up -- happened when the 1TB drive had reached 500GB of backups and the Hard DRive had 150GB of info - - after a cleanup that included getting rid of IPHOTO - just created a single empty default library - I reduced my hard drive to 100 MB.

On time machine did you cancel backups - so no drive shows in time machine?

    Cancel Backups,

    erase time machine drive

    Select drive for time machine

    leave hourly backups off

Do backup now -- do not run anything else while the time machine is running the initial backup - and it may help to not sleep your hard drive.

The original, internal hard drive (1 TB) was/is 80% full and backing up to two 3 TB drives.  My current 1 TB external boot drive is about 15% full and the TM backup drive was a 5 TB drive.

But I had gone a couple of steps beyond what you suggested - I stopped TM backups, reformatted the drive, deleted the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file from the /Library/Preferences directory and then rebooted.  Same result.

As I said, I can take this same external boot drive, attach it to another iMac, boot off of it and everything is absolutely fine without having to jump through all of the hoops listed above.

The first step, and maybe the only one needed, is to get rid of your worthless "anti-virus" software.

Please remove the Norton/Symantec product(s) by following these instructions. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. If you tried to remove it by dragging an application to the Trash, reinstall it and finish the job.

Back up all data before making any changes. Never install any "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" product again.

It may be because you are using an external drive as your boot drive as opposed to moving files off of your internal drive to an external drive - and it is causing some confusion.

    Balancing your drives may help.

Also because of the size of the backups - disconnect from the internet and do not allow any auto-connect -- activity during a backup can cause issues -- its why I turned off hourly backups.

Thanks again, Linc.  I hadn't really considered Norton, but it would make sense in a way.  It also answers the question of why the machine operates just fine except for this one small application.  As soon as I get home tonight, I will definitely give it a try and report back.

Linc, I can't thank you enough.  As I write this, TM has backed up about 12 GB if 156 GB and estimates about 5 hours left.  While it remains to be seen if this is the definitive answer, it is, at this point, miles and miles beyond where this had ever been.  And I checked on my older iMac on which the external boot drive had worked fine and, sure enough, there was NO Norton installed.

From here forward, I'll be configuring network protection on my home network through my router.

It seems that my elation was a bit premature.  Yes, Time Machine now starts the backup process, but stalls out somewhere short of the end.  I thought that this might have something to do with the OS stopping the hard drive at some point after the display has "gone to sleep", but even after unchecking that option in the Energy Saver setting, it did it again.  This time around, though, I can still use the Mac more or less until I try to perform a reboot.  I've gone into Console and checked the system log and I don't see any threads that crashed, nor do I see any remaining Symantec or Norton threads (in fact I wiped all remnants of Symantec/Norton from the boot drive just to be on the safe side).

    Anything else I can check?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES â–¹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View â–¹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an abnormal backup. Now

CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD

so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Posted below is the information you requested.  A short bit of background.  I had attempted to reboot this morning and it appeared to hang going down to the reboot.  Since I was about to leave for work, I decided to let it just sit and see what happened during the day.  It had rebooted, though the boot time was 4:19 PM (I left for work a bit before 6:00 AM!).  Looking backward, there had been a lot of PBRequest failures that ultimately resulted in the failure of the main thread.  Don't know if that helps, but I figured I would mention it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. Just describe what happened; no more log extracts, please.
