Lenovo ThinkVision X1 display and MacBook (retina)

Today I took delivery of a new Lenovo ThinkVision X1 display. I specifically chose this display for my MacBook because it support USB-C; finally I can get rid of the Apple USB-C dongle and run everything from a single cable as nature intended. However, while the monitor works just fine with an HDMI cable (not 4K of course), I cannot get my Macbook to recognize it when I connect just using the USB-C cable. It does see the USB hub in the monitor, but not the display part. Does anyone have any experience getting this monitor working? I've tried both Apple USB-C that came with the Macbook as well as the USB-C cable shipped by Lenovo.

Thanks

MacBook, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

The USB-C to USB-C cable issue is really enoying so far i tested the original that comes with the monitor, the cable that comes with the new apple charger and a Belkin 3.1 USB-C to USB-C Cable (Also Known as USB Type-C) which is only 3 foot long . NON of them work.. the Belkin and Apple cable does provide charging for the 2016 macbook but there is no signal for the display.

I dont think this issue is only due to the length og the cable?

so far the only usb-c cable that apparently works is the one Aanon4 reported:http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030319&p_id=13003&s eq=1&format=2

Hope to find other solutions

Hi Aanon4 to which cables are you refering?

i was just looking over the skematics of the monoprice and the Belkin http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F2CU030/

But i cant figur out why the Belkin dosent work - as you said short cables seem to work but the Belkin is a short 3 foot cable of very high quality superspeed+

also approved by the guy from google that tested a bunch of USB-c cables http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A25GROL6KJV3QG/ref=cm_cr_rdp_pdp. Any ideers? did you have to register anything on the mac first ? i tried to hold down the options key while in the systems preferences --> Displays. to get the hidden detect display botton but that dosent help me.

I tested two cables. Both are only 90cm long and rated for USB 3.1, but only one of them does work. The cable that comes with the macbook and the one that comes with the monitor do not work, as reported by others.

This one from Aukey does work:

This one from Tenswall does NOT work:

Sorry to hear that! I think for me it worked out of the box - maybe I tried reconnecting a few times, but not too often.

Sometimes, I do not get a video signal. This mostly happens when the MacBook is connected to the monitor and then goes to stand by with the cable still connected. What usually works for me is to turn off and on the monitor - with the cable connected the whole time. When it works, the monitor usually looses the power supply through the cable 3 or 4 times for about a second. (You can see the charging icon in the top right corner of the screen change.) But apart from this issue, the cable does work.

I hope it will work for you!

Had this screen for several weeks now and just wanted to give my two cents..

First of all cables - the short ones work - club 3d, belkin, aukey have been tested and do work.

But when and if you receive this monitor you probably need to connect with Hdmi or display port and through the menu on the monitor switch to USB-C as source..

Second if you have a macbook 2015 or 2016 you can install an overwrite which will give you the option to switch to 60hz while in 4k mode which in return downgrads usb 3.0 to usb 2.0 if you have any peripherals attached to the monitor.. here is an "how to" http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/4k-at-60hz-on-12-rmb-hack-monitors-cables-ad apters-that-work.1974167/#post-22932460

Third as reported the monitor flickers sometimes which is really annoying.. also there seems to be a slight hissing sound emerging form the monitor, this goes away when the monitor flickers (usually it goes dark for 1 or 2 seconds and comes back on)

There is no support from Lenovo and to go through the Lenovo you will need serial number and so on, which is also kind of annoying.. So there are no updates to the drivers unless you use windows. while this might be a with issue firmware there are no updates -- heres a link if they at some point decides to make one http://support.lenovo.com/dk/en/products/Monitors-and-projectors/LCD-Monitors/Th inkVision-X1?tabName=Downloads&linkTrack…

Do not buy this monitor for a macbook !! seriously DO NOT BUY IT..

Just want to share my experience from today:

1- ThinkVision X1 work with the Macbook with a few tricks

2- It works both with the Aukey and Original Lenovo Cable

3- It works out of the box at 30hz with Original Lenovo Cable, but you need to close macbook using an external Keyboard. It works well at as well at 60hz but you need to have the macbook closed using an external monitor.

4- You might need to experiment exchange between USB2 and USB3 on the side of your screen

5- The patch from https://github.com/Floris497/mac-pixel-clock-patch-V2 works well, see here how to install on your macbook here http://9to5mac.com/2016/06/04/lg-27ud88-w-usb-c-4k-monitor-macbook-review/

I needed to have an external internet connected to my MAC and not all ports work in same way and the connection just works Using the 60hz and USB 2 option, which is strange!......

Did this monitor get more unreliable with the recent 10.11.6 update? Whenever my Macbook sleeps it stops charging, then wakes up, starts charging, then goes back to sleep. Repeat with many annoying "bing" noises on each repeat. Anyone else?
