Files you can transfer with iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Box or Google Drive.
Photos you can transfer from your iPad to the MacBook Pro by plugging it in. They can be imported to Photos for Mac.

May 17, 2016 12:26 PM in response to Georg Portenkirchnerby slothead tom,Good points. I hadn't thought about all those resources. I think my motivation for asking the question is my skepticism of the new USB-C connector and its capability on the new MacBook. Just what can it convey?

The data transfer capability of the USB-C port isn't only meant to be used with an iPad or iPhone (Photos, books, music, audio books, etc.) but also with external hard drives or flash drives.
