Q: How can I correct an email address mismatch?

I had to change one of my email accounts, which I did.  Ever since, I'm asked to enter my password, but for the old address, which is not there.

Do you mean that your Apple ID is still the old email address? You can change the Apple ID to the new address. One of the experts here will tell you how.

I guess I should have explained more.  My Apple ID is not the problem.  My work email domain, attached to Google, changed a number of months ago.  I changed it in Apple.  But I keep getting a message that I have to sign into this email with my password.  When I put the password in, it's going to the old work email and telling me there's a mismatch.  So, the changed email address comes up on the page where you input the password, but the error message says they don't match (and shows the old address!).

    Hope this makes more sense.

Still not entirely clear. What are you doing when you get this message? Trying to get mail? Signing In to iTunes, iCloud, app store?

You mean that you changed your Apple ID in Apple?

The message says you have to sign in to the old email or the new?

If you answer these, CCC may be able to help you more...

I the article, it says to SIGN OUT of all Apple services - I think that MAY be your issue.

    1. Sign out of everything
    2. make any changes
    3. Sign IN to services as needed with your new credentals

I may not have made clear...

Your email address is one half of your Apple ID Credentials. Password is the other half of your Apple ID credentials. Together, they are commonly referred to as your Apple ID.

I did change my Apple ID months ago with the help of an Apple support guy.  There are no problems with that.  When I go to "Mail," I get a message that says, "Enter the Google password for [old email address] in Settings.  When I choose "Settings," the screen brings up the new (changed) email address and asks for the pw.  When I put it in, I get an email address mismatch error.

No.  My Apple ID has nothing to do with this. I have 3 separate email addresses - an att.net, a gmail, and my work email.  When the work email changed, I changed it on the computer. The problem I've had ever since is that I'm asked to provide the password for my old work address; when I try to do that, it brings up my new work address.  When I put the password in for the new work, I get the mismatch error.  My att.net and personal gmail account work fine.  The only problem is with my work Google account because the o address is overriding the new one.

Aha! 1st mention of Apple Mail and gMail... (my crystal ball has been busted for years!)

Easy troubleshooting for any email account in Mail is to simply delete the account and add it back.

gMail is IMAP so everything is on Google servers and will come back when you do this.

Lol, sorry about that. Instead of deleting the account, what if I just change the new domain back to the old (since they're linked)?

I did not follow any of this...

Your troubleshooting effort is meant to "make a fresh start" in Apple Mail with your gMail IMAP account

(none of your messages will go away as IMAP is all on Google servers and merely being "displayed" in Mail)
