Q: Safari does not open on iMac

After downloading a program from the internet, Safari keeps crashing. Firefox, however, is still working. I trashed Safari and downloaded it again, reinstalled it, rebooted the computer and still crashes. I ran a test (reboot-D) and it passed it. All I remember is that when I downloaded the free program Mac the Ripper, I got an "install" feature and seconds later Safari crashed.

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

Thank you so much Niel. The problem was solved after following the instructions in the apple support page (prompted by your "here" link). I have an iMac, late 2012, so the VSearch (Library/Applicationn Support/VSearch) was not where the instructions say. I opted to go to some of the folders that matched the names mentioned in the support page and saw some Genieo files. This reminded me seeing this "Installer" program telling me I could easily uninstall Genieo at any moment, which is just a lie.

    I couldn't find InstallMac files.

Well, I trashed about 5 different Genieo files and right away I tried to open Safari and it worked! --After that I continued reading on the support page and at the bottom I found about getting rid of Genieo files, which I have already done.

I'm really glad I have Firefox as my alternative go-to-browser, otherwise I would've been totally cut from access to the internet. By the way, Firefox was also affected. Every time I scrolled down a page some Windows ad for protection from malware would take over the screen. It really tested my patience, but I got to fix it in the end.

    Thanks again, Niel!

Hi Niel-- you helped me earlier last year, sending me a link to a step-by-step guide to clean a Mac free of malware. Well, I've been using that same link every 3 to 4 months more or less, just for maintenance. I just learned that link is no longer available. --I should've made a copy to keep it in a pdf.

The "here" link is now a different page. Do you know a way to get that other page again? It was a step-by-step guide to remove malware manually, by going into the folders and also by using the "go to folder". A considerable long process that took about 15 - 25 minutes.

I think Apple Support has removed that article.

I don't know what happens, but after trying everything, the next day Safari opens without problems....
