Q: Extending my extreme network with another extreme - waiting for internet access

Hello - I have a new generation Airport Extreme (call it Extreme1) connected to my Comcast modem and it is working fine. The Extreme is acting as the router as the modem does not have router capability. I am trying to extend my network to another room using another Extreme (call it Extreme2). I have a wired connection between the two rooms. Extreme1 has an ethernet cable from one of it's LAN ports connected to the WAN port on Extreme2. When I try to create a new network with Extreme2 (using the same name, passwords, etc) it does not work. It gets hung up at the end when it's searching for a connection ("Waiting for internet access") - I've done the following things based on what I've read here:

  1. Changed the IPv6 settings to local link
  2. Tried the set up on my Macbook and tried it on my iphone
  3. First extended the network and then tried changing the configuration after doing for Extreme2 by creating a network
  4. Tried creating a network with Extreme2 connected directly to the modem
  5. Factory reset Extreme2 after every attepmt

And nothing works. Kicker is, I also have a reasonably new airport express and the same thing happens to it as well.

Do I need to adjust some network settings that I'm not aware of? Is it possible my LAN ports are off on Extreme2? It's brand new.

Thanks for any help.

Is your second Airport Extreme set to Bridge Mode?

Last Modified date on the Apple instructions was May 13th 2016

That may be......but you must not have looked at any of the illustrations or "how to" instructions in the document. Take a look and you will see that all of the "instructions" are for a version of AirPort Utility that was last used with Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

No instructions at all for AirPort Utility 6.x, which was introduced in Lion and no instructions at all for any version of AirPort Utility for iOS.

When I connect the Thunderbolt/Ethernet dongle to my computer and directly to the Extreme the "light" on the network panel in my system preferences is yellow and it says "Thunderbolt Ethernet has a self assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet."

I'm guessing this is why none of my ethernet ports work. Must have something to do with my connection to the modem which is an Arris TM822G - modem with telephony but no router so that's all being done by the Extreme.

Very strange.   Now, we are not sure whether the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter is working or not.

Go back to wireless on the Mac, which I assume is still working, so you can connect to the Internet.

If you open AirPort Utility   (Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the AirPort Extreme picture

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Internet tab at the top of the window......what is the setting that you see for Connect Using?

Then, click the Network tab.....what is the setting that you see for Router Mode?

Called Apple support today and they solved the problem!

I ended up speaking with someone who had a recent call with a customer with a similar problem.

In addition to my macbook pro connected to my Extreme (via ethernet), I also had an ethernet cable connected to an ADT pulse router and an ethernet cable connected to a powerline adapter to enable a roaming network with another Extreme in room on the other side of the house.

She had me remove those other ethernet cables and just try the one ethernet cable connected to my MBP. I was able to get internet access! So, we went device by device to see what was causing the whole mess of a problem and it was the powerline adapter! For some reason, my powerline adapter was causing a problem with the ethernet ports on the Extreme.

    Who would have guessed that?

Thank you Bob for all your time and assistance - much appreciated!

Nice work, but if you powered everything off, and then powered up only the modem, TC and your Mac.......then nothing else on the network would have been involved.

So, you must have inadvertently left some other devices on (the powerline adapters?)  when I asked you to test just the modem, TC and Mac.  That would explain why your Mac was not able to connect when we were trying to test things earlier.

In any case, glad that you got things going.
