Q: El Capitan 10.11.5 does not shut down

After installing 10.11.5 on my Macbook Pro Early 2015, it hangs during shutdown.  I need to hold the power key to force it to turn off.  However, at the login screen, the shutdown button works OK, so the issue may be not logging off.

    • The power button nowadays no longer turns the computer off. It merely drives it to sleep/hibernation. If you truly want the thing OFF, you need to use the option in the Apple menu explicitly.
    • If the computer refuses to go to sleep and/or a shutdown is impeded, there is some task/process that is blocking the action. Try running the Activity Monitor, found in Applications / Utilities, selecting the Energy tab. Look in the Preventing Sleep column.
    • If you need further diagnostics, try downloading and running EtreCheck. It will produce a report of what the Mac is up to, either use that directly or paste it in this thread for analysis, interpretation and remediation suggestions.

    Here is the EtraCheck report:

    1. I removed the adware

    2. not sure if Startup Items is still an issue

    3. Note Diagnostic Information at bottom, Wacom pen crash (second from last line).  I removed the Wacom Pen applications and fixed the shutdown problem.

Question: is "Startup Items" a problem?

    thanks for your help!!!

Do you use a Wacom tablet? The software is known to cause the problem you have.

Not currently using the Wacom tablet.  I removed the Wacom apps and system reboots normally now.

Question: are these still a problem?

I have no use for that application and I don't pay attention to its output. If the computer is working to your satisfaction, you don't need to do anything else.

Yes, the power button still can turn the computer off.

How to turn on or turn off your Mac - Apple Support

"If you can't shut down your Mac because it isn't responding, you can force it to turn off without shutting down. Hold down the power button for 5 seconds, until your Mac turns off. Use this method only when you can't shut down. You'll lose any unsaved changes to documents that you have open."

Yes, it is the equivalent of pulling the power cord on a desktop computer. With the latent risk of data loss at various levels and to be avoided unless it is a desperate measure of last resort. Not something to be done as a routine everyday of using a computer.
