    Hi

    Check your settings:

    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Sounds & Haptics:
      • Check that the Alert Volume is towards the centre or right hand side;
      • Check that Silent Mode is not enabled;
      • Check that Haptic Strength is set to the middle or far right hand side of the slider.

    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Messages:
      • Perhaps choose Custom and check - under Alerts - that Show Alerts, Sound and Haptic are each enabled.

    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Phone:
      • Perhaps choose Custom and check that all desired options are enabled, including Sound and Haptic under the Ringtone heading.

    • On your watch:
      • When viewing the time, swipe up on the watch face, swipe left/right to the Settings glance > check that Do Not Disturb is not enabled (the button with the moon icon).

    You may wish to use your watch with these settings:

    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > General > Wrist Detection - turn this on.
    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Passcode > Turn Passcode on.
    • Still within the Passcode settings screen, also enable Unlock with iPhone.
    • After putting it on your wrist, your watch will then unlock after whatever you do first: either unlocking your watch manually (by entering the passcode) or unlocking your iPhone. It will then remain unlocked until you remove it from your wrist, when it will lock again automatically.

    With Wrist Detection enabled, make sure that you have placed the watch on your wrist and unlocked it before placing an incoming call to test whether it rings.

    Also note that how notifications behave depends on the status of your devices and on how your watch is configured. In order to bring notifications to your attention as soon as possible:

    • If your iPhone is unlocked, you will receive notifications on your iPhone instead of on your watch.
    • If your iPhone is locked or asleep and your watch is unlocked (regardless of whether the watch screen is asleep or awake) and on your wrist, you will receive notifications on your watch.
    • If your watch is locked or has Do Not Disturb enabled, notifications will go to your iPhone.

    For the best performance, also keep both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi permanently enabled on your iPhone.

    Hi

    The small red dot icon at the top of the watch face indicates that you have one or more unread notification alerts awaiting your attention in Notification Centre. To open Notification Centre and view your notifications:

    - When viewing the time on your watch, swipe down on the display, then tap on each notification to read it in full. Swipe up again when done to exit back to the watch face.

    It is not presently possible to use custom ringtones on Apple Watch (whether for messages or calls from specific contacts). If you would like to suggest that Apple considers adding this as a new feature, you can do so here:

    When replying to a message, if you do not wish to use a preset rely, tap on the microphone icon to dictate your preferred reply (it is not possible to type replies in the Messages app on Apple Watch):

    microphone-messages.gif

    To choose which audio-based reply methods are offered when dictating replies to messages on your watch:

    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Messages - for Audio Messages, choose from:
      • Dictation or Audio (to be offered the choice each time you reply - after you have finished dictating);
      • Always Dictation (to be sent as a written message);
      • Always Audio (to be sent as an audio clip).

    In respect of audible alerts for messages, refer to my original replies in this thread.

    Note also that different questions should be asked separately on Apple Support Communities (if, having searched, you cannot find an existing answer).
