Q: unable to update windows 8.1 on MBP using Bootcamp

I have an early 2011 MBP and would like to instal Windows on it (Windows 8.1 qualifies, as per Apple guidelines). I have downloaded the .iso file for Windows and copied it onto a pen drive. I have also run Bootcamp, where it installed the so called Windows support software from Apple (these got copied onto the same pen drive with the .iso file, which is connected to the MBP). On clicking 'Continue', I get the message 'Installer disc not found'.

I checked the guidelines on Apple website to instal Windows using a pen drive, but these steps do not work. I even formatted the pen drive to MS-DOS FAT, but the same thing described above happens (.iso file copied on the pen drive, and additional windows support files also get copied here automatically), but I still get the same message.

Assuming that the windows support files and the .iso file have to be on separate pen drives, i even purchased a new pen drive and copied the .iso file on it. But I still get the message.

It'd be great if someone could help me with whats going on here, and how to instal Windows on my mac using the .iso file I have.

Thanks in advance.

You don't need a pen drive for bootcamp with Yosemite (or El Capitan). You can keep the .iso file on your computer.

I would highly recommend you to check this guide that was created by Apple.

Thanks luuklp, I have gone through that link earlier. (I have el capitan). I get stuck at point no. 3 in that guide. cant go beyond it.

The only reason I tried to use a pen drive was because of the same message I got when i had the iso file on my hard disk. Bootcamp just doesn't locate the iso file irrespective of where it is located, nor does it ask for a path to find it. I am stuck on the screen with that error message. what next?

The 2011 Macs come with a built-in Optical drive. You cannot use a USB Installer. Burn your 64-bit ISO to a physical DVD (do not use a multi-mode (32-bit/64-bit ISO). Download the BC drivers to a USB using option 1 of the BC Assistant. Insert your physical DVD and click on Option 2 (Install...) and follow the process.

Please also see https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/assistant/6.0/ . If you need the BC Assistant 5.0 manual, please post back.

Thanks Loner. My problem is that I dont  have access to a DVD. Will have to find on. Though I found a solution by installing Parallels desktop and using the Windows ISO file.

If a VM solution works for your needs, it is less effort than using Bootcamp. I have a Bootcamp installation, that I have imported as a VM, allowing both types of uses, with and without reboot. Please remember to create appropriate backups.
