Q: RSA SecurID app window lost using multiple monitors - problem and solution

I was using Mavericks with the RSA SecurID app at home with my external monitor, then brought the laptop (Macbook Pro 15" Late 2011) into work where there is a thunderbolt display.  The RSA SecurID app was not visible although I could see that it was running by examining the dock and also Mission Control. I just coulnd't get it to come onto a display where I could use it.

Failed attempts to recover the window:

  • This app does not have the Window choice in its menu (it's a quick and dirty port from Windows) so I can't do Window->Zoom.
  • Digging around in plist files was not too helpful.
  • Resizing either of my displays was not helpful.

I finally hit upon the solution of temporarily selecting Mirrored Displays (Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement).  This did enough internal reconfiguring of the geometry that the application window became visible, and I was able to grab it at move it to a more central location on the built-in display of the laptop.

I post this problem and solution here in case anyone finds it useful, as I have often benefitted from such posts in the past.

I, too, experienced this problem and tried all of the steps you described. The only way I was able to recover the window was through using a third-party open source app called Spectacle, which provided me with key-board based controls to shift the window up.

I too experienced the problem with the RSA app, tried Spectacle and after installing it realized it did much that same thing as BetterSnapTool. If the RSA is the frontmost app but hidden due to the multiple monitor issue, if I use BetterSnapTool to issue a command for say top left, the window is moved to top left.

Genius.  Thanks for the tip.  I had the same problem in windows 8 and the same solution worked.

I use my MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt Display & iMac (as a display). Everytime I disconnect an external monitor I experience the same problem.  My solution was changing the resolution (System Preference > Display > Resolution: Scaled > Choose [More Space] or Choose  [The Highest Resolution]).  After you resolve the issue make sure you keep the RSA window close to the Dock.
