Q: My MacBook Pro doesn't start up

HI,

My MacBook Pro was on sleep mode for around one week. I have opened the lid to woke it up, but didnt work, then connected it to power and turned it ON, but just heared the sound of chime and nothing happene, the display was completely black and nothing. Just the Caps Lock light could be ON, the fan worked and the sleep LED was ON when closing the lid.

AT first tried to start it up in safe mode by turning on and after chime sound, immediately pushing and hold the shift key, but again nothing.

Then tried to reset the NVRAM, by turning on and after the chime sound immediately press and hold the "command-option-P-R"  keys, but again nothing happened.

Then tried to reset the SMC, by pressing left "shift-control-option" keys and turning on at same time, but unfortunately again just the chime sound and nothing happened.

unfortunately my last back up on time machine came back to 2 months ago and I have entered a lots of data during this period.

Can some one help me to solve the problem and start up my Mac.

The MB Pro is 15" late 2011 with OSX Yosemite

Greatly appreciated.

Hamed.

Connect it to a monitor.  If there is an image, your MBP display or the connection to it may be faulty.

If the connection was good and the MBP goes through the start process but with no image, that suggests a GPU problem.  For a definitive assessment, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be FREE.

    Thanks Ciao,

Can I do the assessment by myself?

Meanwhile, my last back up on time machine come back to 2 months ago, and I have entered lots of data to MBP. Is it possible to take a back up of last data from MBP?

    kind regards,

    Hamed

    Possibly.  Try target disk mode:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201462

Or take out the HDD from your MBP, install it in an enclosure, connect it to another Mac via USB and see if you can access the external HDD.

    Thanks Ciao,

I will do it for taking back up.

Also, can I do the assessment  of GPU problem by myself ( since Apple doesn't has any store in my country Iran) ?

    Regards

Unless you have the diagnostic tools at your disposal, I cannot see how you can determine with full confidence that the GPU is faulty or not.  If the GPU chip is defective, the repair is a logic board replacement.  If there is a connection to the GPU that is the problem, heating the logic board and have the solder 'reflow' sometimes will correct it, but that is a high risk repair.

    Thanks Ciao,

I'm checking to find a way to access to Apple store in out of country for assessment.

Anyway and before doing that, in order to make sure about my MBP correct connection to TV, lets check it again:

I have used a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. connected it to mini display port (Thunderbolt) of MBP and the other side by HDMI cable to TV. turned the TV on, put it on HDMI input, then turned the MBP on. NO DISPLAY on TV.

Is it correct way or I should pressed any key on MBP to change the output to external display.

    Thanks,

    Hamed

A successful connection to the TV is also dependent upon correct TV settings.  Check the TV manual/menus and make certain that it can receive the signals from the MBP correctly.

If the display shows an image, then it is NOT the GPU, but the MBp display or display connection.  If there is no display image, then the GPU is the prime suspect.
