Q: How to reset Safari due to freezing?

So for several months now my 2010 iMac has been freezing on and off. It literally freezes everything except the mouse cursor and I have to hold down the power button to restart. After much testing I find the culprit is Safari!

Last week I did a reinstall of the OS via booting into the partition but the problem persists. It's often when I have a few tabs open but not sure if that's relevant?

So I thought the fresh OS install would do a fresh version of Safari but as the freezing is still happening I wonder what else I can do to get Safari as clean as possible without losing my bookmarks etc?

Maybe delete prefs file or some other stuff? Would really appreciate some help from you Safari gurus

    Hi,

Which version of Safari is your Mac running?

If you aren't sure, from your Safari menu bar click Safari > About Safari

    Which version do you see?

    Try to reset Safari settings:

    1.Open Safari

    2. Click on Safari menu at the top(to the right from the Apple logo)

    3. Select preferences/privacy tab

    4. Click on Remove all website data

    5. Close Safari.

    Delete Safari cache files:

    1. Click on finder

    2. Look for GO menu at the top

    3. click on GO and hold down the option key. This will show user library folder.

    4. Click on Library and look for Caches folder

    5. In caches folder open com.apple.Safari folder

    6. Move to trash Cache.db file.

This should solve the issue. If it will not help try to turn off Safari extentions

    1.Open Safari

    2. Click on Safari menu at the top(to the right from the Apple logo)

    3. Select preferences

    4. Find extentions tab

    5. Turn off all the extentions

    6. Relauch Safari

    Hi...

You may have a Safari extension or third party plug-in installed that's causing a conflict. It’s easy to troubleshoot.

From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Uninstall one extension at a time, quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.

Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

So it has been fine for a few days but then froze again just now. However, this morning I did check the 'allow internet plugins' this morning as it wouldn't let me view any flash content. Maybe that, but I have now turned all my extensions off, though I am gonna miss Adblock Plus!

With the extensions off, is Safari operating normally? If so, try turning on the extensions 1 or 2 at a time until you find which extension is causing the problem.

So my iMac is still crashing even without any extensions turned on. I have the plugin activated though, for flash etc.

It's definitely Safari related. I guess there is no way to do a clean install of just Safari is there? I love it and don't want to switch to another browser. I shouldn't have to!

    Any ideas please?
