Q: Died during OS X update, no room to reinstall

My macbook Air ran out of battery during update from Yosemite to El Capitan. When trying to log on an error appears when the password is entered and the system reboots. When trying to reinstall a new version, the systems claims that the HD has no room to install El Capitan and cannot find a way to revert to older version. How can I get back into my laptop without losing my files?

There is an option to reinstall from time machine which I backed up two weeks ago. Will this mean all data created since then will not be reinstalled?

Thanks

MacBook Air
