Q: I upgraded my RAM but computer is still freezing

I recently upgraded from 4 GB to 8 GB RAM after I noticed the memory pressure was at max in the activity monitor. I was having frequent freezing problems. However, after the upgrade, all of the programs are just using twice as much RAM as before and the computer is still freezing.

This may be a separate issue, but Safari is using around 4 GB of RAM alone. If I close other programs, the RAM using temporarily goes down but then it seems the Safari usage increases to reach capacity.

Is this normal?

The Etrecheck report shows you have a lot of adware installed,  Remove all of it.

You have the totally unneeded CleanMyMac2 installed.. Use these directions and delete it:

    http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac2/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac- 2

When you have removed the above, see if the performance has improved.

    Ciao.

What brand was the RAM upgrade? That can be critical. We see many reports here of Corsair, Kingston ValueRAM†, and sometime PNY RAM cause fits in an Intel-powered Mac.

† -- Regular Kingston RAM does not seem to have a problem in Macs but many resellers do not make it clear they are pushing the "cheap" version.

I deleted the Adware but I can't seem to find the cleanmymac application. I think I may have deleted it already but since I didn't use it to delete itself, it might still have traces on there!

In any case, when I close all applications and restart my computer, the baseline RAM being used is 5 Gb/ 8. And then Safari alone uses up the remaining RAM with about 10 tabs open. Is it normal that double the RAM is used by all applications when you upgrade?

Not traces, its still there and it still has to go, you may have to install it again in order to remove it properly, but I am not an expert on CMM

With the newer OSXs, the parameter for determining RAM usage is 'pressure' not the amount.   Pleas read this Apple support article:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201464

What does Activity Monitor show?  (Your MBP can accept up to 16 GB RAM, but I do not believe that you need to do that)

Csound1 has a very good idea.  Install CleanMyMac2 and the delete it.  After that, run another Etrecheck report, post it and see what the results are.

    Ciao.

Thanks for the info! That's what I was wanting to know. Yes, the memory pressure seems to be low despite almost all the ram being used.

I actually didn't need to reinstall cleanmymac2. I went to ~/Library/LaunchAgents and ~/Library/LaunchDaemons and deleted the associated files.

I just found another post here with two more places to try as well.

Re: How do I remove Clean My Mac from my computer?

I had a cleanmymac2 log file in Users/Home/Library/Logs. Reran etrecheck and cleanmymac2 doesn't show up.

So far I haven't had any freezing after deleting the files you recommended. I wasn't working on my computer today, but usually I have Safari, Word, Excel, Acrobat, and 2-3 other applications open at once. So I'll see how the computer performs in those conditions.

    Thanks!

I found the additional files in ~/Library/Application Helpers and ~/Library/Preferences. Seems to be clean now per Etrecheck. I'll check if that solves my issue.
