Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

Mac is the most profitable company in the world dont understand why  dont do something to keep customer happy we know it is a weak part and not normal wear. im customer with apple since so many years Steve Job vision was not like this and he have create one of the best brand in the world but if Wall Street continue they will sink it.......

Apple your becoming greedy......your product are more expensive than other brand. I choose to pay more to buy peace of mind and top of the line that ok but in return I expect quality product and the service that go with it......

For my self after 2 week 6 back and forth at apple store  they finally fix my problem replace the wrong i5  4ram and give me back an original I7 8 ram and refund me all. So I should be happy but have mix feeling knowing they maybe use the same weak part who could break again in no time.

My 11-in MacBook Air, purchased 14 months ago, died the other day.

As with all the other stories, it was running low on juice. I plugged it in, went to bed, and woke up to find it expired.

Brought it to an authorized Apple repair place and it's the logic board. Will cost almost $700. I contacted Apple, and told the CS rep about all the people having the same problem. However, they won't do anything 'cause it's not enough of us.

    ***?

    They just lost a customer.

Sorry, you can stop cringing. My PC's last for years. They become obsolete before they break. I have a 16 year old Viao, that ran Windows ME,

and it still boots up. It is amazing to me how after all this with Apple, you need to bash PCs?

Rebecca i had same problem with an early 2015 Mac Air 13".You see once you leave the store and you didn't buy the SO called Apple care you are your own.Have you ever considered why Apple Care costs 1/3 of the price of a Mac?They know what faulty product they have. These companies became so greedy that they want money, more money!!

They only understand when you stop paying even a single penny at them!!

This is the original message from an Apple representative that was trying to shut my mouth with a new Mac:

Similar issue here. MBA 11", 2013, wouldn't charge all of a sudden, except if using an 80W adapter. Was told that replacing the I/O would fix it, however now they say the whole logic board needs replacing, there are new issues like it won't wake from sleep etc. Logic board replacement is more than half the cost of a new one. Pretty disappointed at the situation, less than three year life for a laptop is very poor.

    Dear Apple,

FIrst, I have to say that I have exact same problem as the original post but the difference is that I went to charge it before battery drained to zero and it refused.

SInce I'm no fan in attempting online quick fixes, I took it to a local Apple Store(Kenya) and they quickly reported that the adapter was not the problem. After a day waiting, the diagnosis came back as logic board issue and a repair quotation of approx. $820 USD...surely!!!

I bought my machine in June 2014 after years of torment from using the more affordable PCs. Using the MBA was bliss until a few days ago when out of nowhere, mother board failure strikes.  I'm still in doubt and looking to send it to USA to another authorized repair shop for a second opinion.  But from the look of posts here, I guess the reality is that MBA lifespan is 1 year and some months then "computer death".   Interestingly, my machine still works with the little battery left so I've done my backups and waiting for its ultimate death. You could say that it's in "vegetable comma" state

Have a 2013 Mac book pro.  Bought in early 2014.  logic board failure.  my previous Mac had a sleep wake problem and apple fixed it as part of their recall.  Had to pay for a fix to this problem. VERY frusterating experience and expensive this time.  I thought I could trust Apple.  constant problems.

My MBA mid 2012 became very slow and the fan spins like crazy, CPU usage becomes > 100%, > 300% sometimes.
Went to apple store, had a diagnose, and I was told the logic board has failed, 750$ + tx for replacement.

Actually it feels more like a software problem, everything still works, just very slow and the fan spins at top speed all the time.

It is my first MacBook and it is only 4 years of light usage. I was about to buy a new MacBook Pro but now I'm not sure anymore...

With so many customers having failed logic board, it is more than clear that this batch of logic board is defective and should be recalled.

Apple, you are the richest company in this world, you can afford this! please face this reality and take the responsibility to solve it.
Please show some tender loving care to your customers.

I just cancelled my Apple Music Membership as this was the only way I could make up for paying $280 for the replacement board for my 17 month old MBA purchased Nov 2014.

MBA failed in the same way as many others describe, closed lid at night and put to sleep but next day could not log in. Then would not turn on.

It is odd that it tried to let me log in as a guest.  Needless to say, I'm glad that my wife and kids still use Android phones and PCs.

I had considered getting them Apple products too, but now am glad I am the only one in the family who has this problem.  I've never had a HP/Dell/Sony laptop fail. They keep going until they are obsolete.

I'm not trying to bash Apple but am highlighting if they charge a premium that a premium product and quality is expected.

Looks like Apple has design flows in the Logic Boards for their laptops.

I have MacBook Air 13-inch, Mid 2013. It had just came back after a repair at the Apple service center. They replaced logic board - $360 - all in one repair, deal that Apple runs in the USA. The computer is only a couple of years old and just would not start.

What is interesting and worth sharing with the group that I went through the same ordeal with my MacBook Pro 15 inch early 2011. I sent it for repair and they replaced the logic board. This was a couple of years back. Apple did not admit that it was a problem with GPU - that was the part of the logic board that failed for many customers, but reimbursed the money I paid for repair after the lawsuit was initiated as result of large number of cases.

    Check out this link: http://www.macrumors.com/2015/02/19/2011-macbook-pro-repair-program-apple/

or just google:' Macbook pro early 2011 logic board failure lawsuit'.

It ***** to go through this twice with 2 of 3 Macs that we have, the older model MacBook is still going.

Apple needs to be aware of loosing it's brand appeal and customer base.

    Very unsatisfied with their product.

I had the same problem... my MBA 2013 failed to open last 8th of may, after being used almost everyday for 2 1/2 years. We tried some troubleshooting techniques (SMC reset etc..) but still failed to turn on. It was not charging as well. So we brought it to an  authorised service provider here in Singapore, QCD, so they could check the unit. After a few tries, they were  not able to open it as well, and advised us to leave it so their technician could take a look at it. After two days, the technician said that we have to replace the logic board for 850sgd.... but he advised us that replacing the logic board has no guarantee that it will work, and advised us to just buy a new unit. We decided not to replace the logic board and the technician offered to help me recover all my files. So we went back on a thursday, 12th May to give him an external hard drive to transfer all my files. The next day, 13th may, we took the unit back and get our external hard drive. We passed by to an Apple store, and luckily, they were having a sale of apple products that they were using for display and demonstration purposes. ...and decided to buy a MBA 2014 for 600sgd. (crossing my fingers that this will at least stay with me for a year..or maybe two!)

I left my MBA 2013 to our couch, under the stuffed toys, near the window. (hoping that a little bit of sunshine will help!) Every now and then, I tried to turn on my MBA 2013... trying to wake it up... lo and behold! after 2 weeks, last 19th of may, the MBA 2013 just turned on!!! Now I'm using it again!

    There is still hope!!!!

And one year after the first post, same happened here. Last week my macbook air stopped working and in the apple store they wanna charge me £300 to replace the logic board. May I know what did you all do about the problem in the end? This is just too unfair

I too have the same problem.

I have bought macbook air in March 2015. Until 2 weeks back it was working fine. Suddenly it got switched off one day and doesn't power up at all. I have tried all the troubleshooting steps given in the apple support pages. As it has been just 1 month over the warranty period of 1 year I will not get a free replacement or repair. Then I took it to the apple authorized service center, they examined the macbook and told that logic board is not powering up due to some technical failure and it needs to be replaced. He said that it will be charged around 40,000 INR ($590) . When I asked him why this has happened, he gave a reason that it might be because of power voltage fluctuation. I don't understand why on earth an electronic device will be damaged when it is powered with the adapter. My adapter is working fine. The whole purpose of using an adapter is to protect the device from this kind of voltage fluctuations. Now I have nowhere to go but to just throw that piece of crap (macbook) in the store room. I completely regret for buying a mac and will never go for apple devices again in my life.

Any suggestions for my problem are welcome.

Another one here! I have a MBA bought late December 2014, so 5 months out of warranty.  Used lightly for streaming and web surfing, never dropped or handled incorrectly. One day is wouldn't power on; even the charger would not light up when plugged in. It started working the next day and charging correctly. I turned it on again that evening, and then it worked for 5 minutes and shut off again.  Even though the charger lights up, there is no response from the laptop, and none of the basic troubleshooting fixes do a **** thing. I'm bringing it to the Apple store Friday, but I'm not optimistic.

Meanwhile, my boyfriend's 2010 white Macbook is still working properly even after what can probably be considered severe mishandling.

THis is just a F***ing joke. I chatted online with an apple employer and suggested him that the logic board might be faulty as many many customers had the same problem. His response?? Anyone can write anything in the internet with no chance to verify if is true... Just ridiculous. And I refuse to spend 300 quid to fix a problem that it appears to be a common issue worldwide...
