Q: problems opening my external imovie archive

I have Mac OS X 10.9.5 and Imovie version 10.0.4. I have an Imovie library stored on an external harddrive. Now when I click on "open library" and choose the external disk I get the following message:

"The operation couldn’t be completed. One or more projects or events were created with a newer version of iMovie. These projects and events will be ignored."

After a quick search I found this information Update projects and events from previous versions of iMovie in iMovie (2014) - Apple Support.

But I am uncertain what they mean by this sentence: Verify that the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders are stored on the top-level of the drive. I have checked that the Imovie library is placed on the top level of the drive but I cant open it and I cant access or place any filed there called Imovie events nor Imovie projects on the drive.

Apart from that detail I followed the advice of the Apple support and tried to go to file-> "update projects and events", but I only get the message that "iMovie could not find any projects or events to update".

Do I need to update Imovie?

What has gone wrong here?

I lent the drive to a friend a while ago as he needed to access some files from the Imovie library, he managed to get them without any issues. Could it be that his Imovie changed the settings of the library?

Can somebody please give me a hint of what to do now? I need my precious movie archive!

iMovie 10, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Your friend must have opened the library with a later version of iMovie 10 than you have on your Mac and let it update the library which made it incompatible with your version.  If you update iMovie on your machine to the latest version (10.1.2) it should read the library OK.

Ok, thanks for the tip. But now as I looked up info about this Imovie version I see that it is compatible with version OS X 10.11.2 or later.

So does it mean that my computer is too old for this update? What can I do then!?

Ah.  Good point.  Yes you will have to update your OS to El Capitan.   Any Mac that can run Mavericks can also run El Capitan.

All the same I would make sure you have a bootable backup of your present system first just in case of problems.  If you rely on other particular applications it is probably aldso worth checking at:

    https://roaringapps.com/apps?platform=osx

to see if any of them don't work any more or need updating for El Capitan.

I am assuming that you don't have a backup of the library before your friend borrowed the drive that you could use.
