Q: update osx on secondhand imac

Okay

i bought a secondhand 2012 iMac with o/c el capitan but cannot install updates as previous owner id comes up on itunes -i,ve tried to put my itunes account details

  • do i erase the el capitan from previous owner
  • i already have a Macbook  Pro with osx 10.9.5 but am concerned about issue with el capitan ie erasing photos ,linking to wireless etc
  • if i keep with 10.9.5 will this cause security issues or do i risk putting el capitan on upgrade on macbook pro ??and across then to iMac ??

This is what the prior owner should have done:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065

Essentially what you have to do is erase the HDD and reinstall the ORIGINAL OSX (Mt. Lion).

Backup your data and boot the MBP into Internet recovery (OPTION + COMMAND + R)

    You should get this display:

Follow the directions and you will get this menu:

First use Disk Utility>Erase and then use Reinstall Mac OS X.

That will then associate your Apple ID with the iMac and you will be able top install all updates.

A solid Internet connection will be required.

    Ciao.
