Q: mac pro dvd drive

I have a Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 (Early 2009/Nehalem) running OS X 10.9. If I put it to sleep with a DVD inserted in the superdrive, upon wake-up the DVD is no longer mounted on the desktop and the eject button is unresponsive so I can't open the tray to remove it. If I restart it, the DVD reappears on the desktop and everything works normally. I tried using some of the unix disk utility commands I found on-line, but nothing happens. It's as if the drive is still asleep and won't wake up (coma mode?). I've read about similar issues with other machines (macbook pro, iMac, etc) but for these the behavior isn't the same e.g. there's no dialogue box with a warning, the drive doesn't spin-up and the disk doesn't appear in Disk Utility. Any ideas?

I think I read something about this with Pioneer drives, I think you have to go to Energy saver under system preferences and turn off put hard disks to sleep when possible, failing that try zapping the pram and resetting the SMC. Instructions on how to do that can be found at Apple's support page, or if you're impatient like me, google is helpful
