Q: Mail preview pane suddenly vanished

My Mail preview pane suddenly vanished and won't come back. I've tried all kinds of clicking/sliding and changing between "Classic" layout and the normal layout, and also quitting/restarting.

 

None of these work. What has gone wrong?

OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), Various Macs old and new

That's what doesn't work, which is why I came here to ask the question.

Did you read the complete tip? Did you try the steps at the bottom?

 

If the above process for revealing the preview pane does not work, do the following:

  1. Quit Mail
  2. Move ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail to the desktop.
  3. Restart Mail
  4. If Mail is working properly, delete the com.apple.mail that you had previously moved to the desktop.
