Q: My Macbook keeps freezing - forcing me to restart

Hello everyone.

I really hope that some of you can help me with my problem. This problem started yesterday (I think), and it's really starting to bug me.

So what happens is, that my computer randomly "closes", and goes to the lock screen (this has only happened when I try to watch a video on Youtube - it doesn't happen every single time though). So I can still hear the video in the background, like nothing has happened - and when I try to lock in again, my computer just freezes, forcing me to restart it.

This has happened around 4-5 times since yesterday.

I hope that some of you have an answer/solution to my problem

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), 13"

Please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information

    What is a 'lock screen'?

Download and post an Etrecheck report:

    Ciao.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A GPU restart report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".gpuRestart". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

    .crash:

    Kernel - .gpuRestart:

I couldn't find any that started with Kernel and ended with .panic. If I have posted any "private" info in the links, please tell me, so I can delete that pastebins immediately.

I hope that you can do anything with this info.

You may be dealing with a hardware fault.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keep your confidential data secure during hardware repair.

Apple recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Just because some one has instructed you not to post another kind of diagnostic report, because it may not be helpful, is to limit your possibilities for solving your problem.  You have apparently chosen not to download the Etrecheck report as requested by macjack which may provide information that may prove to be useful.  Certainly there are never guarantees for success with any report, but to not post it works against your interests.

Do not misunderstand, the final decision is always yours and i respect that.  Just do not be unduly influenced by others which may be to your disadvantage.

    Ciao.

Uhmm.. I did the matter of fact download Etrecheck, and removed the adware that was found on my computer (I'm still yet to find out, if that has worked). But right now, I'm just trying to keep an open mind to every solution.

My computer just made me restart again, so Etrecheck didn't really help..

The Etrecheck report is not to designed to directly solve problems.  It simply provides some basic information about a MBP that may help define, locate and diagnose problems.  It is an information tool only and does not make any changes in a MBP on it's own..

Any adverse information that Etrecheck may develop still requires action to be taken by the user.  It appears that you are imparting features that it simply does not have.  If you choose to do so, search these forums how the Etrecheck report has been used in other discussions, often with great success and occasionally with no meaningful benefit.  No tool or procedure is a panacea and that also applies to the Etrechec report, but far more often than not, I have found it to be useful.

    Ciao.
