Make sure you did the Reset (restart) on the iPod as described here

Where are you plugging in the iPod nano when you see this message on the iPod's screen?  If it's to a docking or charging accessory of some type (not to your computer's USB port), that accessory may use FireWire charging, if it's an older type.  Current Apple devices do not support FireWire charging (only USB charging).

I reset nano using the apple support method . but still the same. The usb ports are on my computer and I tried all six but no results. However I ran the nano down to almost zero and plugged it in and it worked . The nano charged and I could download music, but when it's full charged or partial charge I get the "Unsupported" message again. I did this twice running it down to zero and it worked. Other than it's broken I have no clue whats happening. Thanks for your response

That error could be caused by a faulty USB docking cable, if it's not connecting properly.  To rule out faulty docking cable, try a different cable.  OR, use the current cable with another device to confirm it is working properly.

If that does not help (or you don't have a way to test the cable), do what you did before to get it to appear in iTunes again.  You may want to do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes.  This erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default settingts

Bought a new usb cable and that seem to be the problem. No "unsupported" message and the ipod charges . Thanks alot Ken, Aloha
