Q: Moving on from DVDSP

I have a client with a library of educational DVDs (20 in all), which from time to time require updating. They were all originally completed in 2006-2009 and updated in 2012 and 2014.

We're grappling with the fact that DVDSP is an obsolete product, even if it still works well (I'm on MP2010/Yosemite). Any new DVD projects are being done in Encore CS6, but like Apple, Adobe stopped developing that. At some point, and we don't know when that is, both apps will no longer work reliably with current hardware and software.

Anyway, I was asked to come up with recommendations for this.

  • What in your opinion is the best currently supported DVD authoring software, even if it's not for the Mac?
  • Has anyone made a conversion utility to convert old DVDSP projects to their own project format?
  • As a fallback, I was thinking of keeping my old 1st Gen Mac Pro around with an install of Lion and FCS 3, just for authoring. Is anyone doing this?

Mostly, I wanted to get a sense of how other organizations may be handling a similar challenge. Thanks for reading this.

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 2010 model, 8-core, 32 gb ram

It is a little surprising that your client is not looking more to the future and web based delivery, but . . .

my two cents would be to bunker a compatible DVDSP system and keep using that.

You should be able to buy used hardware cheaply to keep they system going for the foreseeable future.

Since you are only using the system to create DVDs, and not create the content that is going on the DVDs, it doesn't matter what OS or other software are on the machine,as long as DVDSP is running well.

If you knew this client, you would not be surprised. Also, a good chunk of her customers are older, and are more comfortable with DVD.

Anyway, that's where I figured I'd end up, but I was hoping there was someone who saw an opportunity here and developed a workflow for old DVDSP projects.

    Thanks

Well, there is Roxio Toast which has added extended DVD creation functionality (more along the lines of an updated iDVD) and is current OS compatible but it won't import a DVDSP project for you to modify:
