Q: Bootcamp still installed for some reason

I created a partition for bootcamp then I later deleted that partition. But for some reason on startup I still see my bootcamp partition disk. When I go to disk utility it only shows one partition (macintosh). Any ideas on how to get rid of the dootcamp partition?

    How did you delete the partition?

    I went into disk utility clicked the hard drive, clicked the bootcamp partition and hit the - button.

    That is not the correct way to delete the Partition, you should have used BootCamp Assistant to remove it.

     

    I will put out a call for a BootCamp expert to look at this thread.

    If you are on 2015 or later Macs, instilling Windows also updates/creates files in your EFI partition. Let us verify that they do exist in your case. If they do, I can provide steps to remove them.

     

    Can you use Re: Can't resize Macintosh HD partition as a reference, and mount your EFI Partition and check if a Microsoft directory structure exists. The commands are used in Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal. The "sudo" commands require your password, which will not be echoed back to you.

    You will need to delete the Microsoft directory tree and the contents under it.

     

    A. The safest method.

     

    1. Backup OSX and all your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

    2. Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support .

    3. Click on Utilties -> Disk Utility and Erase your internal whole disk.

    4. Restore OSX and your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

     

    This requires a separate external disk which can accommodate TM backup - Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support .

     

    B. The safer method.

     

    1. Boot Into Internet Recovery - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support - using Command+Opt+R.

    2. Click on Utilities -> Terminal.

    3. Run the following two commands.

         diskutil eraseVolume fat32 EFI disk0s1

         diskutil repairDisk disk0

     

         Answer 'yes' to rebuilding the EFI partition.

     

    C. The most unsafe method (This is also used in the link I provided in my previous post - Re: Can't resize Macintosh HD partition ).

    1. Mount the EFI (as you have it now.

    2. In OSX Terminal, run

         rm -rf /Volumes/EFI/EFI/Microsoft

     

    In all cases, you will need to reboot at least once, and test.
