Q: iOS 9: Duplicated icons

Hello everyone.

Since iOS 9 is out, everytime (or almost everytime) I update an app I'm left with a duplicated "ghost" icon of the app in question.

This morning for example I updated Facebook, Messenger, iMovie and a few other apps...

And as you can see from the screenshot below, each of the above mentioned apps has that ghost/greyed out effect.

Basically when I update an app, I'm left with two icons: a normal one, that works (you can't see that on the screenshot, it's on another page of the springboard), and a ghost/greyed duplicate that doesn't work.

To fix this, I need to reset home screen layout, and the problem goes away.

It's still a bit annoying though.

This never happened in the past, it's only happening since I installed iOS 9.

At the beginning I thought that it could have been a bug of the new operating system, but it's still happening even with 9.1...

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have exactly the same problem. I hard reset my iPhone, from iCloud, even from iTunes, Apple also reset my appleID password. The final thing was change the iPhone for a new one in the Genius bar. THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS! So, it's not the device. Please, can anybody help with this? It's really annoying. Thanks.

Me too! And nobody seems to care about! iOS 9 is really garbage! This glitch is so annoying and I regret that I have not stayed with iOS 8!

@crino85: How did you update the previous iPhone from iOS 8 to iOS 9? iTunes or OTA? Did you restore the new phone from iCloud/iTunes Backup, which was created with your previous iPhone?

Hello! I updated from OTA and I set it up as new a new iPhone (no backup). I have to say that from yesterday I'm not having this issue anymore! I did the updates from yesterday and today ones and it worked perfectly, no more duplicated icons. I suspect some old app was causing this problem and with the new app update this problem has been solved. I'm with my fingers crossed to sed if this has been solved forever. Good luck!

Curious! Some weeks ago I did a factory reset (only settings). Only the "first update process" after reset was corrupted. After that the glitch had bizarrely gone. However, since yesterday the problem is back, e.g. WhatsApp, YouTube, ... It is a shame!

For clearer understanding: You got a new (refurbished) iPhone at the Genius bar and set it up as a new device (without backup). After that you downloaded and installed your apps via AppStore again. Some time later updates were available and you installed them, but the issue appeared again, although it was at least a software-sided new device? And now it is gone? Sorry, but that beats me!

That's it! Exactly what you said. New iphone, set up as a new iphone, downloaded my apps and duplicated icons when any update. Since yesterday; everything it's fine now. So the only thing I can thinks is some applicartion was the problem and with the update the problem is solved. Regards.

Really? Do you have many apps installed? Maybe we should compare all our installed apps to identify the faulty app. But now I am asking myself: Why und how could an app corrupt the whole springboard in this way? Usually that makes no sense! It would be clear, if only the faulty app has a duplicated icon. But as I said, since yesterday apps like e.g. WhatsApp, YouTube, ... generate also a duplicated icon again, when they were updated. Which apps did you update since the issue has gone?

BTW which iPhone generation do you use? Do you even know, which iOS version was installed on the new given device? Are you already on iOS 9.3.2? It seems, that only European devices are affected. What a mess!

I thought, I get rid of this problem, if I delete the whole content of the phone und reinstall iOS in DFU mode. Then set it up as a new phone und download all my apps again. It is frustrating enough, that I will lose all my data and savegames. But if a new handed out device without restoring a backup as in your case does not solve the problem, my approach probably will not fix this issue.

Yes, It is the last thing I can guess. Last updates have been: Google Maps, YouTube, Dropbox, Whatsapp, Marca, Snapchat, Instagram, Skype, Wallapop, Microsoft OneDrive, MSQRD, LinkedIn, Wazypark and Mi Fit.

I'm using an iPhone 6s Plus with iOS 9.3.2.

"Yes, It is the last thing I can guess." --> What do you mean?

I want to ask you again: Do you remember, which iOS version was installed, when you got the new device? You spoke with an Apple technician about this issue at the Genius bar. What was his opinion on this?

Hello, I meant that the only thing that rest to think is that some apps are causing this problem. When I got the new device it was 9.3.1, the first thing I did was update it to 9.3.2. I went 3 times to the Genius bar, the first time they (of course) reset it from iTunes because they thought there was a problem with the ROM and restoring from iTunes you also restore the ROM, they failed. The second time, they forced me to uninstall Mundo Deportivo and La Vanguardia apps because they think these apps consume all the cache memory, they failed again. The third time, they gave me a new iPhone 6s Plus. It's a big shame we have these kind of issues when we pay almost $1000 for their devices...

"It's a big shame we have these kind of issues when we pay almost $1000 for their devices..." --> I totally agree! As I already said, it is a mess!

Okay, I thought, it could be an error due to upgrading from iOS 8 to iOS 9. But your description with the old and new device disproves this theory. So if it is not the hardware of the device and not the iOS software? What could it be? As I already mentioned, I do not believe, that one faulty app creates duplicated icons from other apps. Maybe it is a problem with the AppStore servers? It is so disgusting! Furthermore it seems, that Apple does not care about this issue, because only a few users are affected. And I do not know, how to inform them in a better way than you did at the Genius bar.

Crino85, many thanks for your support!

Closing words: Apple looses more and more its quality in all ways! I hope, many users will realize this and do not buy this overpriced crap any longer! Apple is a snooty absolute mess!

I would ask you all to contact Apple support (https://getsupport.apple.com/) via telephone or chat and inform them about this phenomenon, because only a few users seem to be affected. It does not cost anything, if you request for a derogation because of upgrading to iOS 9. They will run a diagnostics test via internet und then report this glitch to their iOS developers. I think, this is the only way, how we can get rid of this problem. So please take the time to report. If anybody knows the solution, please post it in this thread. Thanks a lot. Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks a lot for this information, but I do not speak Spanish, only German and English. Could you please explain, what he answered? Do you know if he reported the issue to Cupertino?
