Q: How do I make Aperture my default photo program?

I would like to set up aperture to be the standard program that opens whenever I connect a device with photos on it and eliminate the Photos program from auto-start. Can someone direct me through this setup?

Aperture 3, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), iPhone sync

    Hi niklah,

Open Photos, and click on Photos in the top menu, then on Preferences>General. Uncheck the box that says "Copy Items to the Photos Library".

Open Aperture, and click on Aperture in the top menu, then on Preferences>Import, and where it says "When Camera is connected open", select Aperture from the dropdown.

That should give you the results you are looking for.

    Cheers,

Gail, that is a copy and paste error, right?

You probably meant to write "Disable the checkmark 'open Photos for this device' when Photos launches". The Photos Import panel has this checkmark below the toolbar.  If niklah disables "Copy items into the Photo Library" it will just turn hte Photos Library i to a referenced library, which is problematic  in Photos and has nothing to do with Photos launching when a camera  is connected.

Disabling "Open Photos for this device" will work, until the card has been reformatted. After each reformatting it has to be repeated?

Thanks léonie! I appreciate your jumping in here and providing the correct info to the OP. That was MY BAD!!! And, as usual, I have learned something from you. I had set mine up the way I described, because I was still importing to iPhoto, so glad to know I need to change my settings!

    Thanks again léonie!
