Q: Final Cut Pro and iMovie frames are being dropped

Hello so I love to video edit, and I have been doing it for a while now. I have an old MacBook Pro. It is a MacBook Pro from mid 2010. It has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo 2 Processor. It has been working lovely with my iMovie program, until about last November.

On November 2015 my MacBook began to slow down on iMovie. I did not know why it was doing that, and the editing software was working fine, it was just when I play it back, it would drop frames. I was frustrated, however I just worked through it to create videos.

However, in April 2016, I downloaded a trial of Final Cut Pro X, to see if FCPX would not drop frames while I edit videos. However, FCPX is dropping frames when I playback, and it makes editing difficult. I thought it was because I had no more RAM, but when I checked, I only used 2GB of storage, since I dont really download anything besides small videos.

FCPX and iMovie both drop frames too much, and it is inconvenient. Can somebody please help?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

IS this still the 2010 MacBook?

HOw much RAM do you have?

WHere is your media stored? What kind of drive? How is connected? How much free space? Dropped frames are usually a drive problem but may be compounded by the type of media? What are your media specs? DI'd you optimize your media when you imported?

As you see from Tom's response, it's much more complicated than you might think. Was there anything else associated directly with youtdeclining response in iMove? I'm betting you started using  a new or different video camera at about the same time.
