1) Your disk might be corrupt and that's why your Mac is unable to read it. Open a default software called disk utility ( which you can find on the search bar) and select your drive that you have a problem with, click on first aid and ur Mac will do the job.
2) there might be a problem with your disk, your USB cable or your USB port. Try connecting some other device to check if there is a problem with the port of your Mac. If not, the problem, most likely, lies in your disk.
