May 27, 2016 2:33 AM in response to Samsuditanaby léonie,Could it be, that you have opened a different Aperture Library from the one, where you created the smart albums?
Or is a filter set? Check the search field below the word "Library". Does it say "All Items" or something different, like "Favorites"?
In that case clear the search field by clicking onto the looking glass and select "All Items".

May 27, 2016 3:04 AM in response to léonieby Samsuditana, thanks again, you really are most helpful but alas again, no success... following up on your suggestion I found a somewhat older version with many of the smart folders I made, so I guess I will have to start from there again. In the meantime I still wonder how I was abel to erase all these smart folders in one silly swoop...

May 27, 2016 3:23 AM in response to Samsuditanaby léonie,★HelpfulWhat sometimes happens - at least to me - that Aperture show a prompt to select a library, if the drive with the current library is not mounted for some reasons. And sometimes I accidentally select the backup copy of the library on the backup drive, because it has the same name as the main library that I want to open. And then all edits will be made in the backup copy and not in my library. The next time I launch Aperture with the correct drive connected, it will look like all my edits had gone, but they are actually in the backup of my library. It is risky to keep the backup drives connected all the time.
