May 27, 2016 4:35 AM in response to Ragsy98by thomas_r.,Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is safe to use, yes.
However, in this case, what you saw was not actually a virus, it was a scam. There are a couple different kinds of scams like this... one asks you to call a phone number, where someone will try to get you to give them remote access to your computer, and then they will charge you outrageous sums of money to "remove" the "virus" (which isn't actually there). If you don't pay at that point, they often will trash your computer these days.
The other kind of scam tries to get you to download and install something to "remove" the (nonexistent) "virus." That's usually some junk app like MacKeeper that will then trick you into paying for it so you can use it to scan your system. For an example of such a scam, see:

Either way, you're not actually infected with anything, unless you actually downloaded and installed something as directed by either of these scams.

May 27, 2016 7:33 AM in response to lllaassby thomas_r.,It can't hurt to check. It doesn't sound like anything was installed, but one can never tell for sure based on nothing more than a description on a forum.

First, never use any kind of "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" software on a Mac for any reason. That's how you cause problems, not how you solve them.
It's not safe to download and run software of any kind merely because someone or something on a website prompts you to. That's how you become infected with malware. You should only use software that you—not someone else—have decided you need, and then only if it comes from a trustworthy source such as the Mac App Store.
Your problem had absolutely nothing to do with malware. It was just a commonplace web scam, and there was no reason to do anything except close the browser window.
