Q: Which password manager integrates better into the Apple ecosystem?  LastPass or DashLane?

I want my wife and I to start using a password manager and it looks like LastPass and DashLane are the to best options.  They offer similar features, though DashLane is more expensive.  That being said I don't believe DashLane has ever been hacked, while LastPass has been.  I also read somewhere that DashLane's service doesn't even have access to your master password if you don't want it to.

All this being said, there are pros and cons to both.  Ultimately it will come down to how seamless they work across our devices.  We are pretty much all Apple now (iPhones, Macbook Pros, Mac Mini, iPad, and ATV4), except for one Ubuntu machine that I'm using as a NAS server for TimeMachine, iTunes, Plex, and OwnCloud.

Before you tell me to trial both and decide, I want to say that we've done that already and still can't decide.  I figured a crowd-sourced answer would help.

Thanks for understanding!!

Most of the recommendations I've seen on this forum are for 1Password.

But what you're really talking about is a user preference. I think it's going to be hard for anyone else to decide for you. I use LastPass. It works fine.

    Best of luck.

    I agree,

Some options that Apple offers for this purpose are built into your OS already though.

    Those are...

Safari Passwords which you can locate through Settings>Safari>Passwords (enter your device Passcode or Touch ID) to see saved passwords/logins for various websites you visit

Notes App which now includes the ability to lock any Note you create with its own password to protect its contents. You can store your logins here for copy/paste use for whatever you may need later on.

Personally I don't trust anyone else but Apple with my passwords. You can actually save your passwords in keychain through your mac, or save them into your mobile devices through iCloud. On iOS they are saved in through safari, settings-safari-saved passwords. It locks with the password you set to unlock your device. Here are some FAQ's. Yes.  I would love for Apple to come out with their own service like the two services I mentioned.  It's true I can use the keychain across devices, but there are times where I'll need access to my account credentials via the web only.  As far as I know, Apple doesn't offer an iCloud dashboard that will allow me to log into a specific website from any device using just a browser.

That's exactly what I am doing now.  Prior to being able to lock Notes, we were using the NoteCrypt app on our iPhones.  Not ideal, but it served its purpose pretty admirable.  It's time to move on to a better solution now though.

Notes app. You can access it from iCloud.com, and after typing in the Note Password for the note that you keep your passwords on, there they will be.

That's a clunky solution at best though and not much better than using what I'm already using.  Ultimately, I might be logging into icloud.com from a given device, opening the note, and exposing the stored passwords in plain text.  Regardless of how careful one might be in doing this, it's still isn't without more risk than using a password management service.

***EDIT***  I guess what I'm really asking here is if anyone has experienced any "gotchas" with one service or the other that detracted from the overall experience and usability of them.

I understand your point in exposing your information to anyone who may be looking over your shoulder, but 1Password displays the passwords as well. You also cannot access the saved passwords from any website login like you were asking for that app. Correcting myself here. You can login to 1Password.com. You could maybe invest in a privacy screen protector for your iPhone to combat this. I never extended the idea as the end all be all solution with no room for future improvement, but it was checking the boxes you had laid out to me.

Out of any of the ones out there, LastPass, would be the best competitor to 1Password. It sounds like 1Password may be checking the boxes you are looking for though. Excluding the look over your shoulder bit, which would only become a factor if you were to open the app itself and browse your saved passwords, it is the most integrated app I have found for this need. It integrates with desktop browsers and iOS as a whole. There will be some Apps that will not utilize it and you may be required to go physically into the 1Password app to see that particular password for copy/paste purposes. That's a pretty small one off though.
