Q: Why does my MacBook Pro v10.9.5 keep dropping my HP Photosmart 6515 wireless printer connection?

My 15" MacBook Pro v.10.9.5 (Mavericks) keeps dropping my HP Photosmart 6515 wireless printer connection.

Here's what I've done so far:

1/ unplugged and restarted both printer and laptop

2/ deleted printer from preferences

3/ downloaded and reinstalled latest print driver from HP website

4/ unplugged and restarted both printer and laptop again

5/ ran a wireless test report from the printer stating "No problems found. Congratulations on the successful setup of your wireless printer"

When I try and use the HP assistant to add the printer, it lets me add it and then an error message pops up

that says "Connection with the device can not be established" and won't allow me to finish setting up the printer.

I also have an older 17" MacBook Pro v.10.6.8 that is not working now either. Keeps saying "printer offline"?

I can't imagine what's going on as everything was working fine just yesterday.

It is merely an illusion that you send data directly from your computer to the Printer. Both the computer and the printer become stations on your Home Network, and are subject to any sort of problems that you may be encountering on your network.

The important device to look at and reset in case of problems like this is your Router. Your computer sends data to the Router, and the Switch functions in the Router are used to forward the information to the Printer.

One thing that can happen in Home Networks is that the IP Address assigned to the Printer is an "automatic" or DHCP address. If there are problems on the network, that address can change, and the Printer can no longer be reached. It is much better to assign your Printer a Manual IP Address that is just a little bit out of the way of your other devices.

Thanks so much. I went to the printer's wireless setup and did it again. It assigned a new IP address and is working now.
