Q: slow running mac - cleanmymac and/or new battery?

My macbook (13 inch late 2009 model) is working fine but running slow. I am considering buying Cleanmymac 3 - but will it make a difference? I've used the demo version which has identified around 110gb which could be cleared if I got the full Cleanmymac3. I must add...the battery has done 470 cycles! Would it optimise performance better to replace battery or get Cleanmymac? I'm not very techy so don't really understand the impact of either. Ideally I would get a new mac but want to try and keep this one going longer if possible! Thanks

Before you get too deep into trying stuff "just in case it helps", read this thoroughly, use the link at the top to download, run and post the Etrecheck report here  > Using EtreCheck | Apple Support Communities

470 cycles is only about half the maximum battery count listed in this Apple article for your model: Determining battery cycle count for Mac notebooks - Apple Support

Stay away from all software that claims to clean your Mac. They will not only not improve the performance of your Mac, they will likely cause even more problems than you are already having.

Follow the instructions provided by ChitlinsCC so that people here can help identify the actual cause of the slowdown.

    Best of luck,

Do not install CleanMyMac3 or any other 'cleaning' or 'performance' software.  What they promise, they do not deliver and what they may delete may corrupt your Mac.

    Ciao.

Under no circumstances should you put CleanMyMac on your computer.  You'd be better off throwing your computer in the garbage if you did.  Macs do a great job of taking care of themselves, and do not need any program that claims it will clean, boost, organize, optimize, or refresh the hard drive in any way.

You need to properly uninstall Claen My Mac http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac-3

While El Capitan will install and run in only two Gb of ram it will not run well. That's the source of your original problem Your Macbook can use up to 8Gb of ram and you should upgrade.

If your battery health is ok the cycle count is within life expectency limits and you need to stop thinking about cleaning altogether.

Thank you Mike and everyone for your help!

I will uninstall cleanmymac. The message by my battery says - 'service battery'...

When you say upgrade - can I upgrade the RAM on my existing machine or do you mean I need a new computer?

    Many thanks

Service Battery means it's time to replace. Upgrading ram and replacing the battery are both simple tasks https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Unibody_Model_A1342
