Q: Backing up Photos

I have an iPad 3 which has numerous Photos & Videos.

Because I am slowly running out of space on the iPad 3, I would like to back them up to an External USB Hard Drive.

Both the Photos & Videos have numerous "albums" to keep different categories separate from each other.

If I back up the Photos & Videos to the external USB Hard Drive, will I lose all of the detailed "albums" I now have?

If I do lose all of the numerous "albums" won't that make it almost impossible to subsequently search & find a particular photo or video (the proverbial needle in the haystack)?

The iPad 3 & my wife's iPhone 6 Plus are both on the same Apple ID & Password.

So, 1st, I deleted the  200 or so Photos & Videos on the 6 Plus - because they are all also on the iPad 3 with the over 1,300 other Photos & Videos.

She only kept a few Photos & Videos on the 6 Plus to show others - since she usually has only the 6 Plus with her when out of the House.

Then, I turned on iCloud Photo Library on only the iPad 3 & gave it a full day to download everything to iCloud.

Then, from my Desktop Computer, I determined that I could in fact access all 1,300+ Photos & Videos by going to iCloud.com & signing into my wife's account.

Then, I turned on iCloud Photo Library on the 6 Plus.

All 1,300+ Photos & Videos are now also on the 6 Plus.

As of right now, my wife still has 479.19 MB remaining out of the 5.0 GB storage iCloud allows.

So, for the present at least, I do not have to pay for any additional iCloud storage.

I still need to download iCloud for Windows to my Desktop Computer because the ultimate goal is to have a more permanent backup of the 1,300+ Photos & Videos (in a separate location).

That must have been exciting to see! The last part of downloading iCloud for Windows and signing in with the shared account is simple enough. You're nearly there. It'll be a matter of installing, signing in, toggling desired sync services, and walking away for probably another day while it downloads everything to your computer.

I downloaded / installed iCloud for Windows

It seems to have installed all of the Photos & Videos - rather quickly I must say.

But it has all of the Photos & Videos in only 6 folders (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, & 2016) & not in the numerous folders as they appear on the wife's iPad 3, iPhone 6 Plus, & on iCloud.com

Did I do something wrong OR are they not yet through downloading?

It sounds like it is organizing them based on "Collections" instead of albums. Let me run a test of this on my Windows partition to see if maybe this was an update made to this particular sync.

The fact that there is only 479.19 MB remaining out of the total 5.0 GB allowed is not hampering things, is it?

Doing this in iCloud for Windows is not requiring any additional storage space, is it?

So, is this as good as it is going to get?

I lose all of my detailed albums?

I could have accomplished just as good by just importing the Photos & Videos directly from the iPad into my Desktop.

Sorry to say but I think that is it... you are correct.

I truly regret the large amount of time I have wasted going down this path - on a recommendation that I assumed the poster knew for sure that it would work.

Turns out it did NOT work & could NEVER have worked.

It just was never intended to work that way.

    MORAL of this Rant:

Please do not give your opinion / recommendation unless you are absolutely sure that what you recommend will work.

Otherwise, use the words "I am not sure about this" or "I think".
