Q: 5k iMac reboots on it's own after installing 10.11.4

Hi,

I installed 10.11.4 on March 24 (I believe), and since that day my iMac has been unstable. It reboots on it's own, like a kernel panic but never logging a kernel panic. This reboot doesn't seem to be triggered by software I run, as I've been removing things to try to isolate the problem.

Yesterday Apple Support had me reinstall the os via cmd-r boot option, and that did not solve the problem... it just ate up an hour of my time.

Any suggestions? My iMac went from super stable to super unstable; it's worse than my Windows gaming pc for stability now.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), 32GB ram

Update to my situation. I took it into the repair shop and after doing their diagnostic tests and everything it turned out to be one of my 8 GB memory sticks. I had updated to 24 GB back in December by adding a 16 GB kit from crucial to my original 8 GB factory RAM. They took out the defective memory and so far it is working normally again.

No idea if this helps anyone else but I figured I would post an update.

Can't say I'm surprised, but 10.11.5 does nothing to resolve the issue. The interval between unexpected reboots (i.e. uptime) may be longer, but the issue, along with the previous shutdown cause -128 in the log persists in 10.11.5

I have not had any silent (no chime reboots) since I installed 10.11.5. (re: my earlier posts)  I did have one crash/reboot but it chimed unlike the earlier ones that occurred after the 10.11.4 update and was related to Safari/Youtube freeze.  I don't have issues with YouTube using Chrome.  The only other thing I've changed was I unchecked the box for 'log out after XX minutes'  box in the privacy/security advanced preference.  I have not had the reboot while sleeping or waking from sleep since 10.11.5.  So far so good.

Still having reboot issue, but it went for almost 15 days after update to 10.11.5 before the first reboot.  Since 10.11.5 was installed, I have had 3 reboots, with no errors reported.  Usually during wake from sleep or during sleep.  The last two occurred while iMac was in sleep mode, I was not using the computer.  Not sure what the cause.  The reboot has changed since 10.11.4, they are no longer silent and go through a full chime reboot/restart so I still am of the opinion that it is OS/firmware related. There have not been as many as occurred during the time 10.11.4 was running/installed. I will follow up with Apple on the open support ticket I have.

the exchange of parts (mainboard and power supply) solve the problem?

    Hi,

since my iMac came back (05/18/2016) from the repair, there were no more reboots, so it seems to be fixed by the replacement of the logicboard and the powersupply.

I am experiencing the same problem... Yesterday, I turned off all the items of energy saving (including the monitor off and the HD rest) , and since then the locking stopped... Please do the test too and tell me...

Yesterday Apple Support in the US reached out to me (in the Netherlands) by phone: a very helpful Apple-tech asked me some questions and had me create a system diagnostic file (choose shift-control-option-command-period simultaneously) which I sent to him by e-mail.

I got the sense that Apple is really looking into this, so I keep my fingers crossed that some solution or other will be found.

    Same issue,

Brand new mid range 27" 5k iMac came with 10.11.4 installed and crashed constantly out of the box. Absolutely nothing installed updated the OS to 10.11.5 and things have gotten worse. Tonight it crashed 4 times in a row.

Im taking it back to the store but after reading this thread I'm not even confident that a new machine will be any better.

Its one thing to have a buggy update but its another to ship €2k machines with an unusable OS. Absolute joke

Not looking forward to the 3 hour drive back to Belfast next Sunday.

Same issues as everyone else: Freezing while using (mail and safarI0 and while not using iMac late 2015. No problems with 10.11.3 until I updated to 10.11.4 and got the freezes/random reboots. Went back to 10.11.3 via Time Machine backup but freezes/restarts continued. Did everything anyone ever suggested about the problem (disabled plug-ins, extensions, Apple Diagnostics, Disk Utility First Aid, turned off Web Gl, turned off automatic backups, and more). Never get any error messages just freeze and restart with chimes. Did EtreCheck but no issues found. So updated to 10.11.5 via combo update...STILL HAVING FREEZES/RESTARTS.  Will call Apple today but not hopeful given what everyone else is experiencing. I live 160 miles away from the nearest Apple repair so hope it's not hardware. Thanks for all the information everyone is giving.

Update: Apple said it was hardware so I took it to authorized service; they said it was "a RAM stick issue" and they fixed that. Said it didn't restart while they had it. Got home (110 miles), plugged it in, turned it on, opened nothing, left the room, one hour later...."CHIME"!!!!   Called Apple again got a supervisor who looked at the log and hypothesized it was a power supply issue since no error messages and restarts are random. So he was going to call the service place and tell them to do more diagnostics and look at the power supply. SO i have to drive back next week 110 miles each way!   Don't understand how computer and power supply could be perfect till i updated to 10.11.4.  Went back to 10.11.3 via my own backup but still the restarts persisted. Now at 10.11.5 and still restarting.  Stay tuned.

Just wanted to add my experiences to this thread.

Bought a 27" i5 iMac in april. I also bought a 16 GB Crucial memory kit. Brought it to my office and set about installing my applications. Had the first reboot after about two hours using it. No error messages or kernel panic; just the full on sudden reboot everyone else seems to be reporting.

Since I had installed third party memory, my first notion was that the memory was the culprit. Removed the additional memory, but still the machine would boot one or two times per day while in use, and always during the night while it was not in use. (I always let my office mac run during the night to be able to remotely access it via remote desktop. My old Mac Pro has been running like this since I bought it in 2007, and I never had any problems with stability.)

After reading a little online, I still suspected memory trouble, and rebooted to Apple Diagnostics to test memory. The memory passed with no problems. I then downloaded a Memtest86 USB image and made a bootable USB to check for RAM problems. It found > 1000 errors on test 10. Downloaded the newest beta version 7 of Memtest86 as well, and ran that from USB; same error. Loads of errors on test 10.

Contacted the retailer where I bought the machine, and they took it in to diagnose it. They also downloaded Memtest86 and ran the test, but found no problems. They had the machine running on an external drive for six days without any problems whatsoever. I then gave them access to my installation, and sure enough; the night after I let them in to the installed OS X on the Fusion Drive, the machine rebooted during night as I was experiencing.

The tech read the threads here about people having trouble after upgrading to 10.11.4 and suggested that he'd wipe the internal harddrive and repartition it from scratch, installing 10.11.3. I got the machine back this monday and haven't had any issues since. Seeing that quite a few people seems tp have had stable periods that last a week or two between the crashes, I'm still not sure it has been fixed permanently, but it for sure is a lot more stable than it was on 10.11.4 or 10.11.5 where it would restart at least three times per day.

I find it very interesting that Apple seems to be replacing hardware to remedy the issue, as a lot of users are claiming the trouble only started after a software upgrade. A botched firmware upgrade might explain the issue, but my iMac came new in the box with 10.11.4, which means that there was no upgrade done in my case.

I am looking forward to see the solution to this and see what is really causing the trouble.

    -KJ
