What is this bonjour and do i need that too for a printer to work?

Bonjour is Apple network resource application. It is loaded with the airport utility. From airport utility in windows open the print tab and you should see the printer is there.

Once you load bonjour for windows, the printer should show up as a network resource.

I have no idea what version of windows you are using but open the printer setup and check if there are network printers available. You will then need to load the appropriate drivers.

it is possible to setup the windows printer using TCP/IP direct to the TC. You must keep the TC on static IP address to do that.

Give me a couple of screenshots of the TC setup and I can help you a bit more..

What version of windows are you running?

Can you see the printer in the airport utility on windows?

It sounds like you haven't setup network printers in windows previously.

See youtube video on setting up bonjour type printer using TCP/IP direct.

Next question is....i connected an external drive also via USB to the time capsule. I cannot figure out how to SEE that external drive on my macbook.

Is the printer and disk plugged into a powered USB hub?? It is strongly recommended to do so.. using a USB hub without power can overload the USB port in the TC.

The USB hard disk should be formatted HFS+ .. No other format works as well but FAT32 is possible with all the consequences of that old and poor method.. later methods like exFAT do not work.. NTFS does not work.

Check in the airport utility under the disk tab.. the USB drive should show up.. but it can be fragile.. ie after a day it will fail to be recognised.
