Q: proxy server interfering with 7.6.7 update?

Hi all. Got an older Time Capsule at school. Not sure if it's 2nd or 3rd gen. At any rate, either way, it ought to support the recent 7.6.7 firmware update. But the update is not showing up, and I wonder if it's all the proxy server settings and stuff I'm forced to use at school. Any ideas? I guess I could bring it home and . . . what? I'd have to change all the settings and stuff, right? Well, any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

I doubt it is just a proxy.. the firewall to protect the school system seems more likely.

You can certainly take it home and do the update there.

It is simple to export the existing configuration of the TC via the top menu of the airport utility.

Then reset it at home to fit your network and once updated to restore the setup at the school.

Please note.. improvements over whatever firmware you have now are probably minimal (non-existent).

A 2nd or 3rd gen TC is now ancient history and likely to die tomorrow.

I can point out where to download the firmware.. so you can upgrade manually.

But to do that I need to know which version precisely the TC is.

In airport utility hold down the option key and click the icon.. you will see the full summary page.. which in the top line will have the version.

Or get the A1xxx number from the base molded into the first line of rubber.

Thanks LaPastenague. Wow, turns out it's a 4th gen Time Capsule. Yeah, if you can point me toward a manual way of upgrading this, it would save me having to take it home and mess with the settings. Thanks!

The TC gen4 firmware is here.

    http://apsu.apple.com/data/116/031-45958-20160525-920D7F2C-2138-11E6-A155-3A5355 29DBDF/7.6.7.basebinary

Just click on the link and it will immediately download your firmware.

(Copy and paste this in your browser and it will immediately download the firmware to default folder.. downloads most likely.)

Make sure your downloaded firmware is exactly this one and the right size. 6,661,468 bytes (6.7 MB on disk)

    Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 4.53.04 PM.png

Now in airport utility click on your Gen4 TC.. the firmware above is ONLY for this model.

    Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 4.50.33 PM.png

You can see this is running 7.6.1 firmware and the red dot shows one for the update.

Hold down the option key and click on 7.6.x whatever number your current firmware is.

    Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 4.54.06 PM.png

    Click Other..

This will open Finder and you locate the firmware you just downloaded. (If you cannot download at school download it at home and put on a USB stick).

    Select the firmware.

Click Open in Finder screen and the firmware upgrade will give you a warning.

    Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 5.06.22 PM.png

Select continue and the firmware update will begin.

    Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 4.54.51 PM.png

Once finished you can check the firmware again.

This method can be used for any model airport to manually upgrade..

To find the correct firmware location open the version.xml file from here.

    /Users/yourcurrentusername/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware

File is small. 26KB and will open in safari if you double click it.. you must know the correct number of the airport.. and therein is the trick.

    Gen6 AE is 120

    Gen5 TC is 119

    Gen4 TC is 116

    etc...

    ran out of time.

So how do you discover which model your airport is..

Easy.. on the airport utility export the configuration.. this is option in the top menu while you have edit open.

    Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 5.18.37 PM.png

In the exported configuration file.. which will be airportname.baseconfig

    so in my case tcgen4again.baseconfig

Open the file in text edit (whatever)

    Look for the following keys

    <key>syAM</key>

      <string>TimeCapsule6,116</string>

      <key>syAP</key>

      <integer>116</integer>

Voila the internal apple designation for your airport.
