Q: Can't remove partition (ex Bootcamp partition)

I am trying to remove the an ex bootcamp partition..

I initially went into disc utility. Chose the partition containing the windows and clicked on the - button.

This has removed the windows stuff in the partition but left the partition there.

When I click on the partion in disk utility all the options in disk utility are greyed out.

It won't let me drag the main partition down to extend it and remove the windows partition.

Baiscally it will not let me do anything with the partition.

I have tried using bootcamp assistant but this will not let me do anything. (tried reinstalling windows but would not format the partition) Error

The reason I was deleting the partition was to do a complete format of my hard drive and a clean install of Lion.

I just can't remove the windows partition.

I have even tried the disk utility at start up (cmd an r) still all greyed out on the windows partition.

Any help would be apprecaited.

PS:Tried Stellar partitionmanager but it wont work on an encrypted drive. Didn't know my drive was encrypted.

I tried booting from my Mavericks install USB, but Disk Utility showed the same things as above.

I also went into Terminal to try and re-create my Fusion Drive but I got the Error -69888 count not unmount disk error.

Do I need to boot from a bootable backup? I would have thought booting from the USB would have been enough.

Please review the one or more of the many tutorials on the web for wiping out, which is WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO, and then Recreating the Fusion drive system.

You have to Break up the Logical Storage Volume first. I know there a few Web tutorials that cover this, I've read them.

    Thanks LowLister,

I have managed to destroy my destroy my old fusion drive and created a new one (somehow the change to the Bootcamp partition made it a second fusion drive).

I am seem to be back to 1 fusion drive of the full size of 3.24TB.

I am now restoring from my Time Machine backup (but that is a six hour process).  I think this should work though.

Thanks very much for your assistance.  I will report back later to see if all is well.

    All fixed now.

Thanks for your help.  I followed these instructions from Macworld http://www.macworld.com/article/2015664/how-to-split-up-a-fusion-drive.html to split up my Fusion Drives and then recreated and reinstalled.

    Thanks for your assistance LowLuster!

II've been following this thread after attempting to remove my bootcamp partition with DU (oops) and am having the "can't unmount" problem. I've followed thru all the steps in this thread and I can't even force the unMount from the terminal. Anyone out there still available to help? I'm afraid I'm stuck..

    HELLO

    This problem is common.

Go to Disk utility and select Main HDD

    500.11 GB HDD

click on partition and select the bootcamp and then click on - button. It will remove the partition then click on Apply

    Have a great day .

AndrewC1970, the same exact thing happened to me after repeated attempts to get Bootcamp and Windows 8.1 up and running on my iMac with stellar specs. So irritating that the process is this 'difficult' In 2015.

I'm just hoping to find a solution that doesn't involve wiping the drive....

For anyone who stumbles upon this thread, I was able to fix my problem--the same as AndrewC1970's--by following the directions on this link:

    http://www.macworld.com/article/2015664/how-to-split-up-a-fusion-drive.html

I started up in Internet Recovery mode, then followed the MacWorld instructions almost exactly.... went to Terminal and listed coreStorage drives, copied the long string of letters/numbers (UUID) for the partition/drive that I wanted to delete, and used the coreStorage delete command in Terminal (pasting the long string of letters/numbers where the instructions say to).

Then I rebooted, noting that the errant BOOTCAMP drive showed up on my desktop now. Went to Disk Utility and was able to remove the partition. Then verified Macintosh HD to check for any errors. It worked like a charm and I didn't have to wipe the drive and start from scratch.

If you're using Yosemite, probably the problem connects with Core Strage feature it used.. Try the following solution in your terminal: https://coriolis-systems.com/support/2015/3/using-ipartition-345-yosemite  It was helpful in my case

I found this solution on another place and it worked very good:

I partitioned the free space (that OS X couldn't use, the ex partition of Windows made with Boot Camp Assistant) with Disk Utility as MS-DOS FAT and named Bootcamp as the original name that Boot Camp Assistant gives to it when it creates it for your Windows install, then Boot Camp Assistant thought it was a Windows partition and I was able to remove the MS-DOS partition and restore the Mac OS partiton to a single one.

This is exactly what I did to remove my unwanted Boot Camp partition after accidentally erasing Windows. Easy peasy!

When you erase BOOTCAMP and create Bootcamp, you have converted a FAT32 partition to a HFS+ partition. BC Assistant will not touch it anymore. Can you post the output of the following OSX Terminal commands?

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list
