Q: How can I view my music in list view in iTunes 12.4?

Its about 30 seconds in and I can't believe how much I hate the 12.4 redesign. Where for instance is list view for my music? Where is Playlist view? Where is the Home Movies tab? Do they test this crap on chimps or just throw it out there and assume we will just suck it up like lemmings?

Oh I am sure the same or similar keyboard shortcuts were always there - it is just as you said - when there were simpler ways to point and click we didn't need them. I am one who doesn't mind clicking when the clicks are obvious, and so tend to do that rather than memorize 1,000 shortcut combinations even though keystrokes are generally faster once you know them. On the other hand, make me do more than a couple of clicks to get somewhere and I'll take the time to memorize the keystrokes.

I actually am not bothered as much as apparently some people here are by what has been referred to as "bloat" on iTunes. I'm actually not sure I'd want to see functions "separated" into multiple apps. As long as I'm familiar with where to go and what to do within it, I don't mind iTunes being the one-stop-shopping for all media - in fact I think it's a good thing, in much the same way that it is a good thing that the iPhone contains all the technology that used to require a storage room to hold.

My only gripe is that they keep making it a moving target. I don't like them changing where things go and how they are accessed after I've already gotten familiar with the user interface. Improving is one thing, but "rearranging the chairs on the Titanic" as you put it is quite another. And unless they are adding new features (which they aren't), then that is all they are doing with releases such as this latest one.

As for the inferiority of the more current Pages releases....yes, it's a deal. I won't get you started if you don't get me started. I don't consider the new releases improvements either (to put it mildly) and so it wouldn't take much to GET me started!

I'm with you. After the update I imported some video files and was dumbfounded to see the interface had again changed. I've been an Apple Fanboy for many years and am now retired from 40 years of IT work. My biggest complaint with Windoze was Microsoft's insistence on changing the entire interface with each version; change for the sake of change, with little or no real improvement in the product. It was extremely annoying, time wasting, and expensive since we had to get everyone else up to speed so work could get done. Just being able to open a Windoze file or mange one's files was an exercise in total frustration. The consistent interface of the Mac OS was a big draw for me personally. It was my oasis when I returned home. Soon after Steve Jobs died, that policy has been thrown to the wayside and it's as if the patients are now running the asylum. I'm beginning to have the same frustrations I had with Windoze. Steve Jobs was not only a visionary, he was an excellent captain of the ship and didn't tolerate anyone who didn't get with the program. Yet, he was also able to inspire true creativity among his staff. That's true leadership and extremely rare. Wake up Apple, people here are providing valuable feedback. Listen or reap the result when someone else eventually does listen and eats your lunch. No one, not even Apple, lasts forever. And the biggest reason is when a company no longer listens to its customer base and provides what they need or want and someone else does.

Ha! I, too, was in IT - though for a little less than half of what you were (but in either case that still pretty much covered the whole lifespan of Windows PC's anyway as I was just starting out when our office got its first Windows PC - I don't think it was even 3.1 yet). I became a superuser and, while not an MCSE I certainly had my fair share of advanced classes in Windows support. Apple at home was - and still is - a similar "oasis" for me, I'm not lucky enough to be completely "retired" yet but I AM  "retired" from IT as I went into a completely different field (medical coding).

I used to be proud of my skills in being able to outwit Microsoft's gremlins but the day finally came when I woke up and realized it was even smarter to throw in the towel and get a system (Apple) that - even with the relatively minor little quirks such as those mentioned in these forms - does NOT require a rocket scientist's skills to figure out solutions to those quirks.

Im looking to change the view of my play lists and it completely puzzled by this.

In the old iTunes you could highlight and select this from the tab in the top right as shown in the picture and then they would be listed as tracks.

Now in this second picture i can not get my new lists to look like above and they look a lot bigger now and the tab on the top right has now gone

in the picture below you can see this.

You can still get the view you want, but the button is gone in 12.4.  Now select the playlist name, then at the top menu select View > View As > Songs.  This setting can be applied to the Recently Added playlist (which someone commented on on page 1).

And now I just discovered these f&^%#ing idiots removed the capability of converting between file formats- I used to often need to make a .wav into an .aac. Looks like you can't do that anymore. WHY???? Even if .aac is the preferred file format it would seem there's no way to change it within iTunes, as I used to by control-clicking the file I wanted to convert

I haven't checked it myself, but this link seems to imply it can be done. Have you tried this procedure?

I can confirm that this works.  For whatever reason the option to convert formats was removed from the right-click menu options, but you can still do the conversion if you select the song (or album) and then use File/ Create New Version/ (default import format).  Be sure to first set your import default to be the format you want to convert to.

When I tried that last night it didn't work but it did today. Thanks. Still cannot figure out why they would remove the ease of the control click...seemingly a mission to make it as infuriating as possible.

Well that’s another few steps backwards...

Can anyone put up a defence for this so-called improvement ?

I find the 12.4 UI a great improvement over previous releases - it is simpler and considerably more logical, without the scatter-gun approach that resulted in functions being randomly accessible via the main menus, context menus, buttons, separate dropdowns, etc.

No one's here to defend (or question) Apple's choices, just help others.

Fair point, but I’ve been doing just that since 1985 and it’s becoming increasingly difficult when Apple repeatedly shoot themselves in the interface foot.

But specifically the 'Save a File in a New Format’ function. Do you honestly consider this an improvement ?

That's a change that I'm indifferent to, as in 10 years of using iTunes I've never once found the need to convert between media formats within iTunes (and the only scenario in which I do so outside iTunes is to convert digital purchases in FLAC format to ALAC, given iTunes' lack of support for the former).  Given that this shouldn't be a function that anyone needs to use on a regular basis, putting it in a logical place in the UI at the expense of one mouse click seems a good tradeoff to me.
