Q: Half memory is other?

I use a MAC Air just to have it around when traveling. There are no files (documents, music, movies...) on it. All I have are the normal applications. I see that "other" has taken up 16GB of my memory. How do I delete the "other"?

It may be local backups. Your Mac creates "snapshots" of backup when you are not connected to Time Machine. You can check with Omni DiskSweeper it can show you the precise size and location of all your files. It will inventory your disk starting from the files that take up the most space. It can also give you a more accurate read of disk space than Finder or Storage Tab of About this Mac. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper.

First you must understand what OTHER actually is:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202867

The OSX is one of the items included in OTHER, so do not think that you must delete all of it.

    Now follow macjack's advice.

    Ciao.
