Q: Time Machine reliable?

I had a Time Machine with my first iMac and also a new one with my second iMac.

I can't say that Time Machine ever gave me the feeling that my back up situation is well taken care off.

I hardly ever could restore a lost file via TM.

My recent experience with Time Machine is, that without any warning all back ups suddenly disappeared and TM begun a new back up.

I now see that today on May 23, the last back up is dated May 8, the oldest is from November 2015!

An automatic  back up system should function totally reliable and guarantee a correct back up.

I am now making backups now and then, on another ext. HD and will never ever buy another Time Machine.

I now need it for my internet connection otherwise I would just disconnect.

Can anybody inform me about a good article and the like about how to use Time Machine?

It is perhaps possible to improve the set up of TM?

By the way I have an iMac with OSX 10.9.5, 2,93 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB memory and Airport Time Capsule 2TB 5th Gen

Thanks for advise and for helping me!

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
