Q: Airplay won't change to mirror iMac from Extend Desktop

When I turn on Airplay I only get audio.  Black screen.  Airplay drop down menu shows extend desktop and won't change to mirror iMac.  I have restarted, verified/repaired permissions, checked for updates and reconnected everything.  Help! How can I get AirPlay to change back to mirror iMac?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

For those who can't resolve the problem, don't forget that thoses files to delete are in two differents folders!!

    Manually deleted the following files:

    APExtFramebuffer  located at: System/Library/Extensions

AirParrotDriver  located at: System/Library/Extensions  AND  /Library/Extensions

I dont have any of these files.... i DO think the iDisplay app that I had to use my ipad as another screen was the cause, bcuz my Mirroring worked just fine when i first got my new imac5k - 2015... but when i used my macbook pro time machine back up for my "Migration Asst", it just stopped working. I DID UNINSTALL the app completely with app cleaners and everything... even those files mentioned above... still nothing.

The screen on TV that my apple tv is connected to... goes blank, but NO MIRRORING.

However, I CAN airplay from iTunes to play on the imac and apple tv speakers.

I just hope El Capitan will fix it... bcuz i've done EVERYTHING suggested on here and NOTHING has worked yet.

    Hi jmiahonline,

I was more then 2 months busy to solve this problem.

There are a couple of programs what can be the problem I learned here.

Open Safari and look above right were date and clock standing. Is there a program icon you installed, that don't show in Programs?

I onces installed Duet and could't find it in the program files. (was the problem for me) Some programs you have to uninstall with the install app!!!

So if you find, then use de install app or download it again and choose uninstall.

Even when I make a new account, it doesn't work, so you must have to find and uninstall the bad program.

    Good Luck!!

I have followed the step mentioned by Siberiankj first with NO success but I have find the way.

    For those have installed AirParrot:

if the Siberiankj method didn't work for you, install the Airparrot again and try to uninstall it using the method they suggest for removing it:

    1. Click on the Air Parrot logo on Menu Bar.
    2. Click on gear logo on the bottom of the Air Parrot Menu
    3. Go to Preferences>General and Uninstall both Audio and video driver and restart if necessary
    4. Then remove the App by moving it to trash. You can also use other apps like CleanMyMac for proper uninstalling
    5. Restart your computer and enjoy again. This way there is NO need for removing manually of those files mentioned in the original post.

Jason, I wish I read your post earlier. Same stuff, I removed APExtFramebuffer and AirParrotDriver from S/L/E, but found them untouched in /Library/Extensions. Removed them, rebooted and finally it works. Being glad to have discovered the cure, I decided to write one more advise and then saw yours!

I want to cut the balls off AirParrot developers.

I have this problem with airplay failed from my iMac late 2012.

I did not install air display or splashtop.

    BUT, I have installed "Duet"

In the beginning, I removed Duet app, but my airplay still did not work.

Finally I remove another file "DuetDisplay.kext". It is under /Library/Extensions. And my airplay came back.

So if someone installed Duet, please follow the steps below:

    1. Remove the Duet.app

    2. Remove the folder /Library/Extensions/DuetDisplay.kext

    3. Reboot system.

    Try it.

    Thanks a lot !

It solved my problem, and my time !

But I often use Duet also, so it's pretty bad...

I'll contact the Duet support, they are cool.

So I had the same issue, except I am not as computer savvy as most of you. I did however manage to fix the issue by distilling the information provided on this thread. Here is what worked for me, mind you this a sort of brute force approach - especially when compared to surgically removing specific files:

TLDR; Delete all the stupid third party apps you've downloaded over the years. If there is a third party app you are particularly fond of, leave it and hope it is not the app causing the issue. Restart computer.

On a side note, from what I am reading the issue is cause by third party apps (quite a few of them from the sounds of this thread). If the problem is third party apps, why the **** are ya'll adding more to the mix? What worked for me was to delete all third party apps I did not use regularly/need. I have no idea which app caused the issue, but I know it was one of the ones I deleted.

Including the time it took me to type this up, and delete the apps, I've spent a total of 20 minutes.
