Q: How can I keep my Apple TV from switching the TV input back to Apple TV when I change volume while watching another input?

I would like to not need my TV remote at all to control my system when I use Chromecast, but when I use the Apple TV remote to adjust the TV volume while watching Chromecast from another input,  it switches the input back to the Apple TV.  This is not at all a useful feature.  Can it be disabled? I would like the input to switch back to Apple TV only when I press the TV button.

"Works for me." I think it depends on how you trained the volume buttons. If you trained them using an infra-red (IR, old-style) remote, operating the Siri remote volume buttons  does not switch the TV input, while hitting the home button does, just as you suggest. But the volume control can work in other ways (HDMI-CEC, bluetooth) which may have different results. Also, I trained mine a couple of tvOS generations back, so the implementation may have changed. Try retraining the volume control.

You might use the remote that came with the TV to change the TV volume when not using the Apple TV.
